Readings for a Winter Solstice: A #BookFair for Magical, #Paranormal and Spooky #Books

A Book Fair for Magical, Paranormal, and Spooky Books

Included in this book fair is my upcoming paranormal shifter romance, Loving Boone.

Beth-Ann Miller returns to her family home to find chaos erupting between her family and their shape-shifting neighbors. Her father is convinced the were-cougar clan is responsible for the murders occurring in their area and interrogates one of the shifters, Boone Evans, her childhood sweetheart. When Boone declares several members of his shifter family have gone missing including his little brother, Beth-Ann suspects someone else is behind both the murders and abductions.

Boone never expected to see Beth-Ann again. When she frees him from her father's cabin and promises to help find his brother, Boone doesn't plan on rekindling their passionate love affair or facing the pain of past mistakes. Nor does he plan on coming face to face with the man responsible for altering his family's life forever.

With men hunting the were-cougars, can Beth-Ann and Boone risk all to have a future together? Or is loving Boone too high a price to pay?

#BookReview ~ Mischief and Mistletoe #HolidayRomance

Mischief and Mistletoe by Mary Jo Putney, Jo Beverley, Joanna Bourne, Patricia Rice, Nicola Cornick, Cara Elliot, Anne Gracie, Susan King

Unwrap the most romantic of Regency delights in this sparkling holiday collection...

Christmastime in England--a time for passionate secrets, delicious whispers, and wicked-sweet gifts by the fire. From a spirited lady who sets out to save her rakish best friend from an unsuitable engagement, to a bold spy who gets the unexpected chance to win the woman he's always loved, to a vicar's daughter who pretends to be a saucy went, these holiday tales will make you curl up in front of the fire for a memorable season of mischief and mistletoe...

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Review

There are eight holiday romances included in this anthology and I enjoyed all of them. I admit, I even got a little teary-eyed over a few of them. Because these are all short stories and there are so many, I'm only going to try to write my thoughts in a sentence or two for each.

She Stoops to Wenchdom by Mary Jo Putney ~ Oh, this was an exciting one to start off the book. The heroine disguises herself as a barmaid for a chance to kiss the handsome hero so she can stop pining after him. I loved the interaction between these two. This is one of those stories that are so good, I'd like to read a longer version.

Miss Brockhurst's Christmas Campaign by Jo Beverley ~ This was probably my favorite in this collection. Penelope Brockhurst has been in love with Ross Skerries since childhood, but she never thought he'd feel the same about her. Now she's to spend Christmas with him and his family as well as a woman who is interested in marriage with him. Watching Penelope's interactions with Ross and her rival were entertaining to say the least. Loved it!

Intrigue and Mistletoe by Joanna Bourne ~ This had so much story in it that I would have preferred to read a full-length novel. There was a lot of backstory to this couple.

Wench in Wonderland by Patricia Rice ~ This was another favorite! I cried with this one. The poor hero is overwhelmed with his responsibilities and his household is a mess. In sweeps the heroine, with a mistaken identity issue, who manages to fit perfectly into his life. But when her true identity is revealed, is it possible for them to have a happily-ever-after?

On a Wicked Winter's Night by Nicola Cornick ~ A sweet story of a second chance romance and the fear of discovery.

Weathering the Storm by Cara Elliot ~ This was different from the typical Regency romances that I've read, but enjoyable.

The Mistletoe Bride by Anne Gracie ~ To date, I've loved every Anne Gracie novel I've ever read and this short story is no different. It's another case of mistaken identity as a woman traveling to live with her miserly uncle is mistaken for the "mail-order-like" bride that the hero needs to secure his inheritance. I loved this one!

A Wilder Wench by Susan King ~ In one short story, this author includes the tale of several generations of family as the heroine is forced to take drastic measures to save her brother.

My Earliest Memory ~ Long and Short Reviews Blog Challenge

Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews.

Today's topic: My Earliest Memory

My memories go back quite a ways considering I remember when my parents brought my new baby brother home from the hospital when he was born. I was convinced they were bringing me a new doll to play with when I first saw him. I was 2 years-old when my brother was born.

I also remember a time when my mother was changing my baby brother's diaper and he peed like a fountain. All over my mom. I remember her scream of surprise and then her burst of laughter. I remember being shocked at witnessing this. And now I still laugh when I think of it! In fact, I'm pretty sure my baby brother peed more than once while my mom changed his diaper. I have vague memories of me warning her whenever she changed him.

I also have distinct memories of my grandfather who passed away a few months after my brother was born. I had a clear image of opening the front door to my grandparents' house to see my pappap sitting in a chair by the window. He turned to face me. As soon as he saw me, his face lit into a brilliant smile and he got off the chair to the floor where he sat on hands and knees to talk with me. I still recall the emotions I felt when I saw my pappap, the joy and warmth that filled me with his smile.

I had questioned that memory when I was older. It didn't make sense to me at the time, because everyone knew the chair by the window was my Nana's chair. Only she sat there. When I asked her about it, she told me that the chair originally belonged to my pappap. She only started sitting in it after he died.

I realized then that it wasn't my imagination when I pictured my grandfather, it was a memory.

I also remember his funeral. I remember being in a long room filled with people. My father was carrying me around and I was wearing a dress. I remember seeing my grandfather sleeping in the box which I thought strange. I was confused why he was asleep and not playing with me.

I have more memories of my grandfather, but these are the strongest and the ones that I'm sure were not my imagination. My family often told me as I grew older about how much my Pappap Bud loved me and my baby brother. He loved to play with us and every time I think of him, I still smile. The love I felt for him as a toddler continued to grow, even after he was gone. And although I barely knew him, I still miss him.

Secret Admirer's Christmas Wish #2 by @Pendarielraye

“Secret Admirer’s Christmas Wish #2”

When a former ugly duckling and the former class heart-throb come together as adults, they find out they have more in common than they realized.

Glenda Shaw knows firsthand what it’s like to be an ugly duckling, and now, she is roped into helping to organize her tenth-year class reunion. The speaker this year is none other than Hunter Teegs, the object of her dreams since their sophomore year in high school. She’s a dedicated social worker with a heart the size of Texas, but her hectic schedule doesn’t allow much time for dating or entertainment.

Hunter Teegs is a self-made financial powerhouse with a boatload of charisma and a winning sense of humor. He’s also a notorious womanizer and heartbreaker. He has no interest in settling down any time soon, if ever. To make matters worse, he has recently noticed details from his childhood that cause him to question everyone and everything he’s come to believe.

When Glenda and Hunter are brought together again, fireworks nearly knock both of them off their feet, and not necessarily in a good way. Glenda knows more than one secret about Hunter, and sharing the most crucial one could mean the end of their relationship before it even gets started.

Excerpt

Glenda felt the heat from Hunter’s hand on her lower back. The way he’d looked at her! It astounded her. Yes, she had grown up, but she’d never met anyone recently who’d known her back then. Hunter hadn’t really known her either, he’d just looked at her…once.

His small speech about how this would be good for her? She never looked at it like that before. All she had thought was how humiliating it might be. His reaction swayed her. Maybe.

If he, the most popular guy in school, thought she wouldn’t be humiliated, then maybe she should give it a chance. She did need to get over her stigma, leave the past in the past. After all, that was all she had been doing these last ten years – leaving her geek past behind her. Maybe Hunter was right. Face these people head on and look them right in the eye, show them what she was really made of. Not run away like the shy girl she had been back then.

They went in and walked down the halls while Glenda tried to steady her heartbeat, keep her mind focused on the task at hand instead of getting lost in the myriad of physical and emotional responses just being close to Hunter evoked. Even after ten years, not much had changed, and that not only included the appearance of the school, but her feelings for Hunter. The realization made her uneasy, to say the least, and her back radiated heat where he touched her.

The halls were still lined with Scholar’s Bowl trophies and tributes to former students, and to her surprise, her name was among them.
