Characters Just Like Me #LongandShortReviews #BlogChallenge

This week's topic: Characters Who Remind Me of Myself and Why

Excluding my own books because I put a lot of myself into my characters, I've read books written by other authors that have resonated with me regarding their main characters.

The first one that pops into my head is Romancing Mr. Bridgerton by Julia Quinn. Oh, if Penelope Featherington isn't me, then I don't know who is! She's a shy wallflower who is considered plain, a bit overweight and has clothes that make her look...blech! She's intelligent, but quiet. No one ever really sees her. She's always in the background, never the center of attention. And trying to withhold certain spoilers, I'll just say that Penelope has a hobby of rather scandalous and witty writings that she keeps secret. I may not keep my writing as secret as Penelope, but Penelope Featherington is just like me!

If only I found my Mr. Bridgerton like Penelope did! I love this story! It brought me to tears!

Another heroine that I fell in love with was Daphne Pembroke from Mr. Impossible by Loretta Chase. She's another bookish heroine (I guess I have a type), who has a secret passion for studying languages and heiroglyphics. When her brother is kidnapped, she has to come out of seclusion to rescue him. So, she finds a man who will provide the brawn while she provides the brains. She's rather strait-laced, no-nonsense, insecure and self-conscious. But she's so much more inside, more than even she knows, and I enjoyed watching her discover this part about herself as well as the journey she makes with Rupert Carsington (who also remains one of my favorite heroes!). Since my pending divorce, I've discovered I'm more than I thought I was, too. Even if no one else can see it.

Stephanie Plum. Ha! I laugh just saying her name. From the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. I don't look like her, I'm sure I'm not as brave as her, but so many parts of her life just mesh with mine that it's impossible to think of characters who remind me of myself without thinking of her. Her family is a lot like my family. Okay, neither of my Nana's were gun-toting grandmas, but if I could combine both of my grandmothers into one, I'd have Grandma Mazur for sure! And Stephanie's luck seems to be about the same as mine. Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. She sort of stumbles through life, doing the best she can and helping others along the way. She's always trying to get her bills paid with little income and no food ever seems to be in her kitchen. She's got some crazy and outlandish friends (you know who you are!) and her love life is always a mess. Yep, sounds a bit like me. Okay, so I don't have a Ranger and Joe Morelli do deal with (oh, if only!), but the rest feels spot on. I often feel if anyone did a movie of my life it would be a drama/comedy. What is that called these days? A dramedy?

Elinor Dashwood from Sense & Sensibility and Anne Elliot from Persuasion by Jane Austen. These two women pulled me into their stories like none other! They both were devoted to their families and had to be the responsible ones, taking care of everyone including their parents. They both were also taken for granted, expected to give up their dreams for the sake of caring for their families and the responsibilities forced upon them. Both had financial strains that left them destitute.

They're both quiet, keenly intelligent, and often overlooked, being outshone by their prettier and more outgoing siblings. Both of their stories made me cry, especially when they both found their happily-ever-afters! They both deserved that incredible happiness!

When it comes to movies, the character who reminds me of myself is Evelyn Carnahan from The Mummy, starring Brenden Fraser and Rachel Weisz. She's another intelligent, bookish heroine who is quite comfortable with her life in a library studying ancient texts and languages. Being without parents, its come to her to take care of her brother, even with him old enough to take care of himself, she has a sense of honor, duty and family loyalty. She's also passionate and yearns for adventure. Although, she stumbles along and makes plenty of mistakes, often getting her into more trouble, but she has the bravery to keep going forward and at the end saves the day. I'm hoping to save the day one day, too. And find my own Rick O'Connell!

One more movie, then I'm done. Bad Moms. Oh, there's so much about this movie that resonated with me! I fall into a blend between the characters of Amy and Kiki. To the outside world, I had the illusion of a perfect life. A wonderful husband, nice house, great kids. But inside, my world was complete chaos. I was overworked, underappreciated and considered myself a married single mom since I had no support from my husband with raising our kids. With all the activities and responsibilities and being a caretaker for everyone, but having no one to take care of me, I'd often find myself sitting in my minivan after dropping my kids off at school, in my driveway where no one could see me and just sob until I had no more tears left. If you haven't watched this movie and you're a parent, I highly recommend it. It's hilarious and touching. Now, I haven't gone to the extreme as these moms have, I can't say that I haven't thought about it. But my life has gotten amazingly better since my husband left and I don't cry in the driveway anymore! I wrote a blog post that you can read here because this movie hit me so profoundly. Right in the feels!

Phew! I know this was a lot and if you hung around to the end, you're my hero! This was fun and surprisingly therapeutic to write and gave me an insight into myself that I didn't think about before, so I want to thank Long and Short Reviews for suggesting this topic!

Author Interview

Hello and welcome, readers! We have Carly Carson here with us today. Carly, Thanks for visiting us.
Thanks for having me.

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
I’ve been writing all my life. My cousin and I used to exchange stories we made up via snail mail. I started professional writing when I won an entry in a Harlequin Round Robin writing contest. They asked if I had any submissions anywhere in their office. Sadly, I did not. But I was hooked!

Tell us about your title featured in: Sweeter Than Chocolate: Valentine's Day Anthology.
My title, Royal Masquerade, is part of my series about British dukes.

Blurb: A kingdom of the heart is hard to hold onto…

Alessandra adopts a name that isn't really hers, when she returns to Austria to claim an inheritance...that isn't really hers. She must claim her Romany grandmother’s property, which is all that’s left of her family and her childhood.

Raul, heir to the Stirling dukedom, must unmask Alessandra's masquerade. Because he needs the same property she's claiming, and his need is more desperate. Because the duke is not all he seems, either.

The battle will be fiercely waged.
Not in a court of law.
But in the hearts of Alessandra and her fairy-tale duke.

How did you come up with the storyline?
I had already started a series about British dukes. I’ve always been interested in marginalized people, and how they retain their cultures, so I knew I wanted to incorporate the Romany people, which required me to move the story to Europe. Then I love to ski, so I thought it would be fun to include a bit of that sport. And voila! Royal Masquerade was born.

What inspires you to write?
I’m inspired by my love of romance. I want everyone to have a happily ever after, which I can at least achieve in my books, if not in real life!

What is your favorite genre to read?
I read most every romance genre, but my favorites are contemporary, military, and romantic suspense.

What would you say is the one thing you are most passionate about outside of writing?
Of course, the number one thing is my family. But who wouldn’t say that? I do love to travel, whether it’s hopping in the car for a day trip to an unknown destination, or a carefully planned holiday someplace exotic. I have to be busy on my vacations, preferring to see all the sights, rather than relaxing on a sunny beach. I’m truly passionate about seeking out gorgeous scenery, and wildlife.

When you are not writing, what do you like to do?
I love to read, of course. I love many sports like all paddle sports, skiing, exercise classes, swimming, etc. I’m a big board game enthusiast. I love traveling and entertaining, and being with friends and family.

Tell us about your other books.
Duke of Devonwood is the first in my series of books about British dukes. Sparks fly as Miranda plots to gain control of her inheritance from a modern day Duke who tries his best to resist her wiles.

Let’s see. If you like military romance, I have Taken by a Navy SEAL: A Navy SEAL follows the rules. A desperate American woman, his accidental captive, must break them.

If you like billionaires, I’ve written a few books in that genre, including Seduced by the Billionaire: To save her sister, a sexy businesswoman accepts a mysterious, high-paying job with a hot business tycoon. But he thinks he’s hired a new mistress.

Also in the contemporary genre, I have several shorter novels/novellas with a touch of paranormal which are known as the Love Charm series. A group of young women friends are each, in turn, gifted by a fortuneteller with a silver bean to use in a love charm. Can each of them find what she seeks, even if the right choice is well hidden?

About the Author:
Carly is a contemporary romance author, who will never marry into the British nobility, as she is already happily married to Traveling Man. But there’s nothing wrong with a little fantasy in one’s life, right? She has three children, who provide a daily dose of reality, even though they are almost perfect (just ask them!) Carly loves hearing from her readers.

Your Wolfish Heart by Erzabet Bishop & Gina Kincade ~Sweeter Than Chocolate: Valentine's Day Anthology Author Spotlight Interview @erzabetbishop #Valentinesdayromance #supernaturalromance #pnr

Blurb:

App Tastic...
They were supposed to have the app live by Valentine’s Day. At least that was what Paige’s brother, Rafe, agreed to. Now here she was hoping and praying that with a little goddess power, and whole lot of technological know-how, he and his team can pull off a V-Day miracle.

Flower power...
Valentine’s Day was Liv’s least favorite holiday, even if she was part owner of Bluebonnet’s, one of the busiest flower shops in town. The holiday coinciding with her daughter’s death at the hands of a drunk driver, and then her marriage dissolving, was just another reminder of how empty her life was. But when a very familiar doctor starts coming into the shop, she feels a tug on her heartstrings, not to mention her lady bits, and wonders if maybe there is someone out there for her after all.

A Wolf in Need…
Dr. Thomas Merton fills his days tending to the needs of others, but he can’t ever forget the dark-haired woman who lost her child to a drunk driver. Not one to poach on another man’s woman, he put his wolf’s attraction and his own on the back burner. But when a fortuitous meeting at a local flower shop leads to a second chance at making a connection, can his wolf convince them both that the right kind of love is worth everything?

Author Interview

Hello and welcome, readers! We have Erzabet Bishop here with us today. Erzabet, Thanks for visiting us.
Thanks for having me!

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
I’ve always been a writer, but I’ve only gotten very serious about it in the last seven years.

Tell us about your title featured in: Sweeter Than Chocolate: Valentine's Day Anthology.
My title is called Your Wolfish Heart and it’s a part of the Shifting Heart Dating App series. It features shifters, some steamy scenes, and more than one scene to make you laugh. Gina Kincade and I collaborated on this one and it was a lot of fun.

How did you come up with the storyline?
I love writing about shifters more than anything else. The dual-natured characters really appeal to me. Gina and I decided to do a spin off series from the Shifting Hearts Dating Agency series shared world, and incorporating a dating app as the newest additions to it all seemed like a perfect idea.

What inspires you to write?
Everyday life. You know that shirt that says be careful or you’ll end up in my novel? More chances than not, if I see it or hear it, it gets filed away for future use. Lol.

What is your favorite genre to read?
I have so many! At the moment I am reading a YA fractured fairytale, a thriller, some business books and a book on children’s picture books.

What would you say is the one thing are you most passionate about outside of writing?
Dogs. They rule my life

When you are not writing, what do you like to do?
I love reading in bed with the dogs, watching Netflix or Prime, going to the movies with my hubby and trying out new restaurants.

Tell us about your other books.
I have over forty titles out there. Most are paranormal romance. Make sure you sign up for my newsletter because this year has a lot of new releases set to roll out.

To Re-read or Not to Re-Read? #LongandShortReviews #BlogChallenge #mustread #books #tbr

This week's topic: Books I Re-read or Want to Re-read

First of all, why do we re-read books? That's sometimes a question that I ask myself. I'm not an extremely fast reader, I think I average about 50 pages an hour, so for me to read a 300 page book that's 6 hours of my life devoted to reading a book that I already read.

Here's the thing... It's like re-watching your favorite movie. The enjoyment of visiting this world again, seeing these characters that you fell in love with once more, experiencing the adventure one more time. It's fun! And like watching movies, there's sometimes little details that you might have missed the first time around that during that second read you say to yourself, "Ah! I see that now! How did I miss that the first time?" Or maybe after you read the ending, you want to read it again to see how the author wove all the clues to reveal the villain at the end.

Aside from re-reading children's books again and again and again (and then two more times) at bedtime for my kids, there's a lot of reasons to re-read stories. For me, I have a few, too. One of my main reasons is to learn the craft of writing. I'll re-read novels to learn how the author created that bit of suspense, or that tear-jerking scene with a main character, or the pacing, the foreshadowing, the POV choices, etc, etc. When I re-read a novel, I pick it apart piece by piece to learn how the puzzle was put together in the first place.

Now, that I have that out of the way, I'll share a few of my re-reads with you and why I chose to experience those journeys again.

3. sy475 15881. sy475 49116

Well, Harry Potter. That should be all I need to say for most of us. I've talked to many, many readers who have re-read these treasures. As I didn't start off as a Harry Potter fan, I am now. I blame my kids. I watched the movies and enjoyed them, but didn't really plan on reading the books. In fact, when I began reading them, I didn't much care for the author's writing. The Sorceror's Stone and The Chamber of Secrets were okay at best. Not stellar to me. But I pushed through because I wanted to read The Prisoner of Azkaban. The character of Sirius Black intrigued me like no other. He was the reason I got this far and then I stopped. I read what I wanted to learn and that was enough.

But, shortly after this, my children grew to school age and we were having bedtime reading that was more serious than Dr. Seuss books. One of them suggested Harry Potter and I reluctantly agreed. I'll do anything for my kids, even suffer through the adverb riddled writing of JK Rowling.

I spent a year reading the Harry Potter kids out loud to my kids every night. From start to finish. That meant, of course, re-reading the first three. I admit, reading them a second time was more enjoyable and I was pleased that Ms. Rowling's writing improved greatly with each book.

My youngest son will be turning 5 in a few months and we're approaching that age where I think he might enjoy hearing the books read aloud. I'm going to admit to you (and only you!) that I'm looking forward to reading the Harry Potter books again!

I read The Hobbit as required reading in 6th grade. I admit, I fell in love with Gandalf and Thorin. Before the movies were released, I decided to read The Lord of the Rings. These were fantastic books! I loved them completely!

Again, my children were the reason for re-reading these again. After we finished Harry Potter, they were eager for more. My third grader had already begun reading The Hobbit on his own at the time, so I suggested we read the books together as a family. My kids are now avid fans to Tolkien, too!

These books I re-read just for fun or I picked apart the author's work to study it. These are all well worth reading one or more time!

Thanks for having me.

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?
I have been writing since November of 2012. I published my first book in May of 2013. My love of reading sparked my desire to write. I read so many books that were full of grammatical errors that it got me thinking, “hey, I can do this.”

Tell us about your title featured in: Sweeter Than Chocolate: Valentine's Day Anthology.
Key to my Heart is a novella about a woman who catches her boyfriend is cheating on her and swears off men. Her best friend asks her to go speed dating with her for moral support and she ends up meeting someone.

How did you come up with the storyline?
I heard about Lock and Key parties and it sparked the idea.

What inspires you to write?
My readers and the notion that I’m leaving something behind that will last even after I’m gone. My books are my legacy.

What is your favorite genre to read?
Paranormal romance.

What would you say is the one thing are you most passionate about outside of writing?
My furbaby, Bella. I’ve had her for 13 and a half years and she is like my child.
