Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: Something I'm Proud of Doing

This week's topic: Something I'm Proud of Doing

As I think about this week's topic, I realize there are many things I'm proud of doing in my life.

I'm proud of being a mom of four amazing kids. Not only that, but I'm a single mom. My journey in life hasn't been easy, but I'm happy where I am now. Of course, things aren't perfect. Life is never perfect, and there are certainly struggles. But I'm proud of who I am, the journey I took to get here, my successes, and yes, even my failures. It's all what makes me, well... me. I'm proud of who my children are becoming, the decisions they're making, and knowing I help guide them.

Also, I'm proud of my career as a romance author. This, too, has been a struggle. I've been writing all my life, always with the dream of becoming a successful author. As I look back, I see the mistakes I've made in this journey, the many times I nearly gave up. But here I am! Still writing! Still learning! Still growing! Still working toward my dream. At this point in my life, I know many people who've given up on their dream careers. I haven't. And I'm proud of my determination and persistence.

I'm also proud that I've achieved many of my writing career goals. I wrote a book! I wrote many books. I'm published! Many times now over the last decade. One of my biggest goals was to become a USA Today Bestselling author. And I did it! Even if I'll only ever see my name on that list just one time, it was worth it. I'm still a little fish in a ginormous pond, but people are reading my books. Better yet, they seem to enjoy them! How cool is that!? I'm proud of each book I write and publish, as each work is a huge accomplishment for me.

One more thing I'm proud of, and it might seem a little silly, but I love it. I'm proud that I taught myself how to knit and crochet. It's something I've always wanted to learn, something that my mother had only started to teach me before she died. It is incredibly satisfying to create useful everyday objects out of bits of string. Really, it almost feels like magic!

What are you proud of?

Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: New Things I've Tried Recently

This week's topic: New Things I've Tried Recently

I like trying new things whether it's food, books, movies, or traveling to new places. You never know when you will discover your next favorite (fill-in-the-blank). It's part of what makes life an adventure!

Food:

I'm a chocolate lover. I'm always happy to find new chocolate to eat! :) Shortly after Christmas, I found a bar of extra-dark mocha chocolate in the discount section. It was so yummy with bits of coffee flavor mixed into the bitter dark chocolate. Better yet, my kids are not fans of dark chocolate like I am (the darker the better for me!), so when they asked to try a piece, they didn't care for the taste. That meant more for me! Unfortunately, I think it was just a Christmas-gifty kind of thing, so I'm not sure if they stock this chocolate on a regular basis at the store. I'll have to remember to check next time I'm there.

Books:

I love finding new authors to binge on! In 2022, I found three! I stumbled upon K.M. Neuhold while reading an anthology. I love anthologies! It's a great way to discover new-to-you authors. She writes M/M romances that are both steamy and sweet. Another M/M romance author I found is Robin Lynn. She has quite a collection of fan fiction which I adore, but recently she released a title of her own called Fire & Ice. I grabbed it right away, and I hope she continues to write more. And for nonfiction, I found a book called 7 Figure Fiction: How to Use Universal Fantasy to Sell Your Books to Anyone by T. Taylor. The title certainly called to me. 7 Figures? Yes, please! I found this book so interesting that I've read it twice. It's really made me think about how I write my fiction and what readers take out of it. I definitely recommend it for any fiction writer!

TV/Movies:

I've recently discovered two new-to-me shows that I'm simply crazy about!

The first one is new on HBO, but it's not exactly a new story to me. Kinda. Years ago, my husband (at the time) bought a new Playstation 3 for himself. With it came a game called The Last of Us. I enjoyed watching him play certain video games that had storylines that interested me. (I am a huge Uncharted fan although I've never once played the game!) Since this was a new game, he started playing The Last of Us to give it a try. He didn't play it for long. The main character Joel and his daughter were just getting into the town when my ex decided he didn't like the game and stopped playing. But I was interested in these characters, and being a fan of apocalyptic stories, I wanted to see more. Unfortunately, not enough to play the game. My gaming skills stopped with Pac-man, Tetris and Super Mario Brothers. So, for years, this story remained unfinished in my mind.

I was super excited when I heard that HBO was filming The Last of Us. And with Pedro Pascal as Joel! Oh, I thought he was perfect! (Yes, I'm a Mandalorian and Game of Thrones fan, too!) This news interested my 16 year-old son. He already knew of my interest, so he brought his Playstation 4 into the living room so I could watch him play. Finally! After all these years of waiting, I know what happens to Joel and Ellie. Last Sunday, HBO released the first episode of The Last of Us. I was thrilled that they kept the characters and the storyline so close to the game. It was heartbreaking, breathtaking and nail-biting! And I can't wait to see more!

Since I have to wait for the next episode of The Last of Us to release (one episode every Sunday... Ugh! The wait!!), I decided I needed another show to watch. So, on Monday, I was scrolling through Netflix, looking for something to interest me when I found The Blacklist. I've heard of this show. I've seen a few clips and I knew James Spader played in it. I loved James Spader in his role as Daniel Jackson in the movie, Stargate, although he's not on my auto-watch list. With Netflix's little preview portion, I watched the opening scene of the first episode of The Blacklist where James Spader as Raymond Reddington walks confidently into FBI headquarters, requests to see Assistant Director Harold Cooper, then calmly sets down his briefcase, slips off his jacket to fold over his briefcase along with his hat, then waits in a room full of people. When the lady at the desk gets the notification that she is talking to a criminal on their Most Wanted list, the alarms sound and men with guns surge into the room. Reddington simply places his hands on his head and slowly gets onto his knees.

I was so intrigued by this beginning. Who is Reddington? What has he done? Why has he turned himself in? So many questions! I had to find out more. My 15 year-old son and I started watching The Blacklist on Monday. We're only up to episode 11 in Season 1, so no spoilers! But I am so hooked on this show! The storylines are intriguing, the characters are compelling. It's filled with action, suspense and mystery. It's definitely addictive! I can't believe I haven't watched this show before now!

That's enough for now! As you can see, I love talking about the new things I find, too! What have you tried new recently?

To Re-Read or Not To Re-Read #LongandShortReviews #BlogChallenge

This week's topic: Re-reading books: why or why not?

I don't re-read books as often as I would like. I mean, really, there are thousands of books to-be-read on my bookshelves that I still want to get to before I'm no longer on this Earth (I sincerely hope there is a vast library waiting for me in Heaven!). But, I do have some special favorites that I will go back and read from time to time.

I'm currently re-reading all of the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I had started reading this series years and years ago before I had children. I found myself addicted to the stories. I read about half of them before I set them down, worried that I would finish them all too quickly. Then I moved into a new house and the book got shuffled around. I finally pulled it back out and started it over again. I really love these stories and exploring the mysteries of Victorian London with Sherlock and Watson as my guides.

Another book I've re-read was This Is All I Ask by Lynn Kurland. She's another of my favorite authors. Her books are truly amazing! The first time I read This Is All I Ask, I was sitting in a doctor's office waiting for my boyfriend. He was getting an MRI and I was content to read while I waited for him. This book is brimming with emotion. I couldn't help but cry while I read it. I remember the other patients in the waiting room casting surreptitious glances my way. It didn't occur to me until later that they must have thought I was upset because of my boyfriend's condition. Which turned out to be nothing. But I had been so consumed with the book, that I didn't think about my tears drawing anyone's attention.

Years later, I still remembered the emotional impact of this book. I wanted to read it again, this time as a writer, to see how the author pulled those emotional responses from me with her well-crafted words. Yes, even the second time reading and already knowing what was going to happen, I cried. Again. This time, in the privacy of my own home. This book really touched my heart and placed Lynn Kurland on my auto-buy list.

There are also some books that I re-read just because the first time I read them so quickly, so eagerly that I really wanted to go through them again at a slower pace, to really absorb the writer's words and to pick apart how the author was able to grab my imagination and attention so completely. Basically, I read these books for enjoyment the first time, and the second time I read them as a writer, analyzing all the elements it took to make that book enjoyable. Dialogue, plot, pacing, etc.

These are a few books I've picked apart:

I have plans to re-read whole series someday. Among those I'd like to re-read are The Bridgertons by Julia Quinn; The Women of the Otherworld by Kelley Armstrong; The Demon Whisperer by Ash Krafton; and The Chronicles of the Warlands by Elizabeth Vaughan.

I've re-read the first three Harry Potter books. The first go-around was for me. The second time, I read aloud to my children at bedtime. It took us a year to get through the entire series. After we finished each book, we'd watch the movie again.

I did this with The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, too. I read these books years before I became a mother, but after Harry Potter, my children were eager for more. I pulled this series out and read to them each night. It didn't take a year to get through them, but after finishing each one, we watched the movie again.

And I might as well add that I re-read children's stories, too. With four kids, I've re-read countless Dr. Seuss and Berenstein Bears books over and over. And Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. I read this book every night for a year to my youngest son. It was the only way I could get him settled in bed. It's memorized now. I can recite it like people recite Shakespeare!

I guess I re-read books more often than I realized! :)

Nonfiction Books That Can Change Your Life #LongandShortReviews #BlogChallenge

This week's topic: The nonfiction book everyone should read and why

The difficult part of this week's challenge is that I LOVE to share books and it is torture to only pick one!

Now, for this list, I've excluded writing craft and marketing books. The only reason I've done so is the challenge was to pick a non-fiction book EVERYONE should read. While I do think everyone should read writing craft books, I also realize not everyone will be interested in those, so I put those favorites aside.

Yes, I put a lot of thought into these posts. So, I couldn't come up with just one, but I did narrow it down to two. (And a list at the bottom! Yes, I can't help myself.)

The first book I think everyone should read is a book I only recently read myself called Ask and It Is Given: Learning to Manifest Your Desires by Esther and Jerry Hicks.

Ask and It Is Given, by Esther and Jerry Hicks, which presents the teachings of the nonphysical entity Abraham, will help you learn how to manifest your desires so that you're living the joyous and fulfilling life you deserve.

As you read, you'll come to understand how your relationships, health issues, finances, career concerns, and more are influenced by the Universal laws that govern your time-space-reality—and you'll discover powerful processes that will help you go with the positive flow of life.

It's your birthright to live a life filled with everything that is good—and this book will show you how to make it so in every way!

What the Bleep Do We Know!?: Discovering the Endless Possibilities for Altering Your Everyday Reality by William Arntz, Betsy Chasse, and Mark Vicente is the second book I highly recommend. This book presents a look at combining spirituality and science which I absolutely adore! You may have heard of the documentary that was done a few years ago, which I also think you should watch! It was fascinating! I found it on YouTube if anyone wants to give it try. This book changed the way I see the world and emphasized to me there are still so many things out there that we don't know or understand.

Gravity sometimes doesn't work.

Some things are both waves and particles. . .at the same time.

Electrons simply disappear . . . all the time. If the universe is this wild and unpredictable, so full of possibility, why are your thoughts about your own life so limited? Hundreds of years ago, science and religion split apart; they became antagonists in the great game of explanation and discovery. But science and religion are two sides of the same coin. They both help explain the universe, our place in the great plan and the meaning of our lives. In fact, they can only begin to do that adequately when they work together.

What the Bleep Do We Know?!TM is a book of amazing science. With the help of more than a dozen research and theoretical scientists, it takes you through the looking glass of quantum physics into a universe that is more bizarre and alive than ever imagined. Then it takes you beyond, into the outer-inner edges of our scientific knowledge of consciousness, perception, body chemistry and brain structure. What is a thought made of? What is reality made of? And most importantly, how does a thought change the nature of reality?

This science leads not just to the material world, but deep into the realm of spirituality. If observation affects the outcome, we aren't merely part of the universe, but participants in it. If thoughts are more than random neural firings, than consciousness is more than an anatomical accident. A higher power exists, but is it truly out there? Where is the dividing line between out there and in here?

This is not a book of definitive answers. This is a book of mind stretching questions. It is a book that shows you not the path, but the endless possibilities. Do you think you have to go to the same job every day, do the same errands, think the same thoughts, feel the same way? Well, think again.

For me, these two books came into my life at just the right moment. I was going through a really tough time. My life was a long list of challenges and complications that I needed to face and I didn't know how I was going to manage.

I'm not sure what made me pick up these books, probably my desperation for help, but I'm glad I did. I've always believed in manifesting. I've done it before, but these books really helped me understand that manifesting isn't just luck or hope. There are vibrations we send into the Universe. We all do. And those vibrations are returned.

While I've read manifesting books that teach you to harness the power of positivity, Ask and It Is Given was the first one that taught examples of methods to help you reach that higher level of joy and happiness. It's almost like a list of games you can play to help shift your vibration. That section of the book has helped me tremendously. And it's fun!

What the Bleep Do We Know!? helped me understand that this is science. This is our reality. And we create our reality with our own vibrations. All the things happening to me, I attract with my vibration. Once I learned to shift it, things began falling into place. I'm still learning and experimenting, but the results are undeniable. I'm walking proof. This stuff works!

Need more convincing? Here are some other books along this same topic that I read and enjoyed. They all sort of spell out the same message.

Favorite Things About Autumn #LongandShortReviews #BlogChallenge

This week's topic: Favorite things to do in the autumn

I love when the trees start to turn colors and the air cools enough for me to turn off the air conditioners and open the windows to let the fresh breeze back into my house. With the heat of summer gone, I can go about my day in either long jeans or shorts depending on how I feel.

Then we have the flavors of everything pumpkin. I drool at the thought of pumpkin muffins. Seriously, those should be around all year long. I know some people can get crazy with pumpkin flavors, but I do draw the line with some things. I tried pumpkin ice cream and that is just not my thing!

Hot apple cider is a must-have treat in my household. Years ago, I learned how to make it from some workers at a cafe near the bookstore where I worked. Since the cafe is closed now, I'm fortunate to be able to make this delicious drink for myself and my kids.

Autumn = Halloween.

For me, that is. Anyone who knows me understands I have a passion for the otherworldly and supernatural. I've been obsessed with ghosts since growing up in my grandmother's haunted house. Tales of cryptids intrigue me. Stories of vampires, witches and werewolves thrill me. I considered quite seriously as a teenager of becoming a parapsychologist or ghost hunter, but I was afraid that wouldn't pay my mortgage when I grew up. Although, I still keep that open as an option for a hobby.

Haunted hayrides and corn mazes are fun things to do with the kids. I take my children to as many free festivals as I can find where they can pick their own pumpkins and paint them. We usually get at least two large pumpkins at home where we carve them into jack-o-lanterns.

Because of my ghostly passion, my kids and I have already visited every haunted site in the county where we live, but during the month of October, we re-visit some places. Last year, I took some of my teenager's friends with us on an excursion to a haunted road nearby where it's said a woman appears who is searching for her killer. We didn't see anything, but it was fun telling the kids ghost stories while driving along an eerie forest road.

When I was a teenager, most television shows about the supernatural would air during October. I'm fortunate to live in a world where the supernatural is a hot topic for discussion. There are countless movies, documentaries and reality TV shows available to view all year long! But, in October, we always make more of an effort to watch the spooky specials and the ghost hunting shows. We have a lot of fun with it.

Finding Vocab Words in Novels #LongandShortReviews #BlogChalleng

This week's topic: Book with the most words I had to look up

I don't find the need to look up words in books often these days, but there was a time when I did. I think it was 9th grade Enlish class. My teacher, Mr. Palamar, gave us reading assignments. We were allowed to read a book of our choosing, but we had to list words we didn't know and their definitions as we read the book.

Out of the many books I read that year, I remember the most I had to look up was from The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas. It was one of the first times, if I recall correctly, that I chose to read a classic novel on my own instead of having it as required reading for English class.

The reason I chose it? The Three Musketeers was made into a film that year starring Keifer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, Oliver Platt, Chris O'Donnell, Tim Curry and Rebecca De Mornay. I wanted to read the book before I saw the movie. Because, let's face it. Books are almost always better than the movies!

Swashbuckling novel, filled with high adventure, royal intrigue and romance, relates the escapades of D’Artagnan and his three friends—Athos, Porthos and Aramis—and their involvement in the secret plots of Cardinal Richelieu and his beautiful but treacherous spy, Lady de Winter.

I'm so glad I chose this book! The Three Musketeers was an adventure I had not been expecting, filled with suspense, intrigue, twists and turns. I was hooked! Shortly after, I got a copy of The Man in the Iron Mask and The Count of Monte Cristo.

Who knew these old classics could be so adventurous and fun?

It was quite a thick book compared to some others I'd read at that time, so I guess that accounted for the increase in vocabulary words I added to my list. Also, out of all the books I read that year, The Three Musketeers was my favorite!

Nowadays, I don't have to look up as many words while I'm reading novels. Mostly, when I feel the need to look things up, its the modern day language that baffles me. I cannot tell you how long it took me to figure out what ROFL meant!!

I Can Talk Forever About These... #LongandShortReviews #BlogChallenge

This week's topic: Topics I Never Get Tired of Talking About

I may be an introvert, but there are times when I can talk nonstop to complete strangers. My kids learned that early on. Often times when I take them to the grocery store, I'd start chatting with someone in the check-out line.\

After leaving, my kids would ask me, "Who was that?"

"I don't know," I'd say, shrugging my shoulders. "Just someone in line."

Let me tell you, it was difficult to explain stranger danger to my children when I'd start having in-depth conversations with people I'd never before met.

Topics of discussion?

Pregnancy, Babies, Children & Teenagers

Every mother I've met has a pregnancy story they like to share. I'm a mother of four. I had my first three babies within 4 years and my fourth baby 4 years later. Each pregnancy was different, each baby behaved differently, and now as my oldest two are 14 and nearly 13, I'm learning that teenagers are a new experience quite different from babies! I've discovered over the years that parents love nothing more than to talk about their children. I can seriously talk for hours about my kids.

Pets

This one is closely related to babies. You can find a stranger who has a pet and I guarantee, they'll tell you all about how their beloved pet came into their lives, how they feed them, how they sleep, how much they cuddle and play. Yep. Our furbabies hold special places in our hearts. I had two dogs growing up and as an adult, I've had three cats. As much as I love my cats, I'm a dog person at heart and I'm looking for a pup to come into my life. I have all sorts of pet stories that I can share with other pet lovers. I also volunteered for an animal rehabilitation center when I was a teenager and in my early twenties, so I have other animal-related stories, too.

Books

What can I say? I'm a writer and a reader. I can talk about books all day. Add to that, in my previous life I worked as a bookseller for over a decade. It was my job to talk about books! I can strike up a conversation with a stranger about any kind of book whether it's romance, horror, mystery, fantasy, sci-fi or any of the many types of nonfiction. I'm an avid reader and I love learning. I love reading recommendations, too! I've discovered many of my favorite authors because of bookstore customers telling me about their favorite books. I discovered Kelley Armstrong, Lynn Kurland, and Janet Evanovich by talking with customers, just to name a few!

History & Genealogy

History Lover? Count me in! I like to think of myself as an amateur historian and genealogist. I've researched my family history back to the 1300s in Germany as well as my Native American ancestors. I can talk about visiting graveyards and cemeteries to locate members of my family that are buried throughout the state where I live. Plus, the stories I learned of my European ancestors immigrating to the New World. Yes, aside from the Native American Indian branch in my family tree, my German, Irish, English and French ancestors arrived before the United States was born. I also discovered that my family nearly didn't survive. One of my direct ancestors, a great, great (so many greats!) grandmother was one of only two surviving children in a massacre that occurred not far from where I live in 1755.

Aside from a love of family history, I'm also a history lover in general. My first love was all things Native American Indian, especially the Eastern Indians of Pennsylvania, like the Lenape. But my interest soon spread to other tribes throughout the region and the rest of the country. Also, I have a strong fascination for Regency England thanks to authors like Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer. And I also have a strong interest in Ancient Egyptians, Ancient Romans, Ancient Greeks, Medieval Europe, Vikings, Pirates, oh, you name it. If it's historical, I love it and will gladly have an endless discussion about it.

Supernatural

I'm not talking about the TV show, but now that I mention it, yes, I can talk forever about that, too! I'm talking about all things spooky! I have a deep fascination with the supernatural. From ghosts to vampires, witches to werewolves, UFO's to cryptids. Send me the mysteries of the planet, as well as the Universe, and I can talk forever about it. I've read countless books (far beyond dozens!) concerning the paranormal. I grew up a haunted house where I had dreams of dead people, and now I live in a house where a murder occurred over fifty years ago. Yes, I believe my house is haunted. I've experienced some things I cannot explain. And do I love talking about it? Yes. I. Do.

One of my favorite times of year is Halloween! Of course, I live my life like Halloween is all year long. I joined a paranormal discussion group that one of my friends started. This week we're talking about Earth Angels! This topic is new to me, so I'm eager to talk with the other members about this.

Fandoms

I'm a fan of many fandoms! As mentioned above, Supernatural is one of my all-time favorite TV shows! I cried when they announced they're ending the show with Season 15. I seriously want that show to continue on forever. What am I going to do without Sam and Dean? And Castiel? I mean, come on! I don't even know how I lived for so long without them!

Among Supernatural, I'm also a super fan of Doctor Who. My first Doctor was Tom Baker. The guy with the scarf, as I used to call him. My uncle introduced him to me back in the late '80s. But it wasn't until the reboot took place that I truly called myself a fan. I got sucked into the show and binge-watched until I caught up with Matt Smith. Now, I'm among the other fans, taking the long way with new episodes being stretched apart for months.

Then there's Farscape, Firefly, Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, Star Trek: The Original, Star Trek: The Next Generation, (okay, let's just say I'm a Star Trek fan since there's so many shows and I'm losing patience in adding them all because I'm writing this over my lunch break and I have to get back to homeschooling my kids!), Sherlock, Dark Shadows (the 1960's version). I feel like I'm forgetting something. Let's just say I'm a fan of many fandoms and let's leave it at that. Mmm'kay?
