2021 Goals #LongandShortReviews #BlogChallenge

This week's topic: My Goals for 2021

I wasn't going to write a New Year's Resolution this year because last year Covid-19 interrupted my plans (I had been doing really well losing weight until the pandemic began!). But that's not to say I don't have goals for this year.

My writing goals continue. I've already signed contracts for several boxed sets for this year and I have my ongoing series that I want to continue.

My goal is to write as much as possible and enjoy myself while doing it. I love writing! It's really like playtime for me. And I want to succeed financially with my writing. You know, be able to pay bills and buy food. That living thing that we all must do. :)

I wrote about what I have coming up this year in a blog post last week which you can read here.

I have several boxed sets that I've joined with other authors this year. I'm also going to be writing more in The Cougar Shifters series. I have another sci-fi romance series I'm working on. Plus, I have a few standalone novellas that I'll be publishing throughout the year.

It promises to be a busy year as long as we don't have any unknown disasters strike such as alien invasions or a zombie apocalypse. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and I'm focusing on happy thoughts. We don't need another 2020. Happy thoughts, y'all! Stay healthy and keep a positive attitude!

Frustrated Reader #IWSG #amreading

The first Wednesday of every month is officially

The Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It's a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

IWSG Asks: Being a writer, when you're reading someone else's work, what stops you from finishing a book/throws you out of the story/frustrates you the most about other people's books?
For the most part, I'm a persistent reader. It takes a lot for me to stop reading a book. Typically, after I start reading I feel compelled to finish, even if I'm not exactly enjoying the story. I always wonder if maybe the book has an amazing ending. Something that makes it worthwhile to read.

It's only recently that I've become more choosy with my reading choices. In the last three years, I've begun setting books down instead of finishing them.

Why do I stop reading?

#1. The number one reason I stop is the head-hopping POV in the middle of a scene. There is really nothing else that throws me out of a book than an unexpected POV shift in the middle of a scene.

The funny thing is, I used to read books like this all the time and they never bothered me until recently. I'm not sure why. Just how it is for me now.

#2. Surprisingly, typos and misspellings in a book don't bother me so much. I'm aware of them. In fact, I've often wondered if I should email the author to let them know about that tiny error on page 5, paragraph 3. But, if there's an overwhelming amount of them, then that annoys me. I'll probably keep reading, but I might not be as enthusiastic as before. I try really hard to make sure my manuscripts are error-free. I know they're never perfect. Despite how many times I've re-read my WIPs, as well as having my editor and beta readers read them, inevitably something is missed. I get it. None of us is perfect. But when it's clear to the reader that a simple spellcheck wasn't done before publication, then I'm having a harder time making excuses for the author.

#3. Maybe its because I'm getting older and I'm more aware of my limited time on this Earth and the constant fear there might not be a library in the afterlife, but I've begun to set books aside that just don't grab me. I usually will read the first chapter or more, but if I'm still struggling to find a reason to care about the characters or the story doesn't interest me, I will put it down. This is usually no fault of the author and I never review these books. It's just for some inexplicable reason, the story didn't keep my attention. To each her own. I'm aware that not all stories are made for every reader. We all have our likes and dislikes. That's okay. But, I'm not going to waste my time reading a story that doesn't keep me awake at night turning the pages.

To date, there is only one book that I stopped reading and threw across the room. It took me years to pick that back up to finish reading it. Of course, afterward, I was so glad that I did.

In The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien, one of the main characters appears to have died. I'd fallen in love with this character in The Hobbit, so I was horrified to read of his death.

I threw the book.

Yes! I threw it!

I didn't want to read more. I walked away, frustrated and hurt that the author would do such a thing. (I was in my teens at the time when I first started reading The Lord of the Rings and very emotional.)

Later, in my 20's when the movies by Peter Jackson came out in theaters, I went to see Fellowship of the Ring in the theater because of my boyfriend's insistance. I was entranced by the movie and decided to give the books another try. I'm glad I did.

Turns out, I gave up on the books too soon giving my equivalent of a reader temper tantrum. Now, this series remains to be one of my absolute favorites and I've even gone back to re-read them!

Be safe! Stay healthy! And keep writing!

Tricia

Sneak Peek 2021! See what's coming soon! #AuthorUpdate #romancebooks #amwriting

Since 2020 threw me several curve balls (well, who would have thought we'd live through a year such as this!), my New Year's resolutions and goals changed considerably throughout the year. I still accomplished way more than I thought possible (see my New Year's Eve post), but I decided I'm not going to make a list of resolutions and goals in quite the same way as I did before.

Instead, I'm going to let readers have a sneak peek at what I'm planning for 2021. Of course, these plans might change. I'm a single mom of 4 kids, I've learned to be flexible in making plans because inevitably something goes awry. Sometimes, I've found, it's better to be spontaneous!

However, I'm really excited about 2021! I want to share some of the projects that I'll be working on.

First off, I have a short story releasing January 6th! A great way to start the year off with a bang! If you haven't already, you can hop over to Amazon to pre-order Captured and Captivated: A Limited Edition Collection of Alien Abduction Romances.

This year, I'm focusing primarily on shifters and aliens. I'm still working on The Cougar Shifter series. Book 2 was delayed due to the pandemic and I found myself struggling to complete it. Readers have asked about when it will be released and while I don't have a date set at the moment, I can say it will be in 2021.

I also have 2 sci-fi romance series in the works. These have been on my list of things to do for a long, long time. This is the year, I think that they need to be written. Aliens are all the rage, as shown by the fans of Stolen and Seduced with over 200 ratings on Goodreads! I'm excited to venture into sci-fi territory. It's always been a passion of mine. I'm a huge fan of shows like Doctor Who, Farscape, Firefly and the Stargate and Star Trek Universes. I've always wanted to write stories like these. I feel like 2021 is the year to take my writing in a new direction.

But, that doesn't mean I'm giving up on my paranormal passion! Far from it! This year, along with shifters, I have stories planned with vampires, witches, demons and maybe even angels! And I have a post-apocalyptic story that is itching to be told. I'm not sure if anyone is interested in that particular sub-genre with the way things are right now, but I really love this story! I might sit on that one for a while, or I might just throw it out there to share with you. I haven't decided. What do you think? A post-apocalyptic romance? Too soon?

I've also got several contests lined up for 2021. I know my readers love those contests and giveaways! If you want to get those notices, you can join my newsletter. Every month, I send it to let readers know about my new releases and contests.

So, that's what I've got brewing so far. As I said, things may change. I don't ever write anything in stone these days. In the meantime, there are some books that are currently up for pre-order. You can take advantage of pre-ordering them and adding them to your TBR list now!

I wish you many blessings and good fortune in this new year! I hope you all live healthy, happy and your dreams come true!

Happy New Year!
