Do You Remember Writing Your First Book? #IWSG #writinglife #writinggoals

The first Wednesday of every month is officially

The Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It's a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

IWSG Asks: Do you remember writing your first book? What were your thoughts about a career path on writing? Where are you now and how is it working out for you? If you're at the start of the journey, what are your goals?

I was 15 years old when I wrote my first full-length manuscript. At the time, it was simply for fun. I had no thoughts about having a writing career. In fact, it took me a while to figure out that the people who wrote the books I loved reading actually got paid for writing them! Yeah. Paid! As in money! Even as a kid, I lived in my own fantasy world that rarely included reality. Well, I guess I still do as an adult. Hey, I guess things don't change that much! :)

Eventually, with the advice of a wonderful teacher in my high school creative writing class, I figured out that writing books for fun could turn into a possible career. (A huge thanks to Mr. McCormick for suggesting I submit my stories for publication! I never imagined that one conversation after class could alter the direction of my entire life!)

Now, 30 years after writing my first book (don't do the math here, my kids assure me that I'm old), I'm a USA Today Bestselling Author, a best-selling international author, and my books have hit Amazon's Top 100 bestsellers lists. I've been writing professionally for thirteen years as an indie author and with traditional publishers. Those are accomplishments that I never would have imagined when I was 15!

The journey to get here hasn't been an easy one. It's been a bumpy ride, and I still have a ways to go. I have more goals to reach for and many more stories to write. Life is never simple. There have been numerous obstacles in my path. And there have been more than a few times when I considered giving up. But writing is my passion. It's in my soul. Even if I stopped publishing books, I would never give up writing completely. I started out writing for fun, and I'll keep doing more of that.

But it's nice to get paid for writing. Having a career where I don't need to get out of my pajamas in the morning is kinda cool, too!

Take It One Day at a Time #NewYearsResolutions #WritingGoals #LongandShortReviews

It's been a while since I've participated in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge! Well, I'm back! I've always enjoyed blog challenges, and this one was always one of my favorites. I missed last week's topic which was to share my goals for 2023 which I did in another post.

This week's topic: What I Think of New Year's Resolutions

I enjoy making New Year's Resolutions, but I don't think it's good for everyone. So many people make tremendous goals for themselves only to find them too overwhelming and then quit halfway through January.

Quitter's day falls on January 13 this year if anyone was curious. Yes, I looked it up.

I've found making small, more achievable goals is necessary for my success. Yes, I would love to write 20 books this year! But can I actually do it? Being a single working mom of four kids? No, probably not. It might be possible for some people, but not for me.

Ten books? Maybe. If I push myself, I know I can write a book in a month. But I don't want to do that every month. Although rewarding, writing a book is equally exhausting. I'll need to plan some breaks in between so my brain doesn't implode. And if I fall behind, I don't want to get upset with myself either.

So I'm not going to start the year telling myself I'm going to write ten books. Ten seems overwhelming to me. I have anxiety, depression and procrastination issues. Ten in a year is intimidating knowing what I'll have to go through to get that done. I don't want to set myself up to fail.

So, I'll trick myself, or more like ease myself into it. Well, let's try for five, I can definitely achieve five, but I'll push for ten.

That sounds better.

Five is doable. I know I can write five books this year. I've done it before. Then I'll re-evaluate where I am with my goals quarterly and readjust if necessary. If I can squeeze one more than five, it's celebration time! Even more than that? Hooray!!

I'm making five my goal because I know I can do it.

But to start off, I'm focusing on only one book at a time. I'm not going to even think about the rest.

Each month, I'm giving myself three weeks to write and one week to take a break. I'm planning to repeat this process throughout the year. Hopefully, it will stick. On paper, it looks good, especially because I have so much other stuff going on.

But if I fall behind because life gets in the way, no problem! My goal is five books. I'm good with that. I'm not going to get upset if I can't do more. I want to have fun with this. If it starts feeling like a chore, I'm not going to do it.

Will I get ten books written? Will I even get five done? Who knows? My life often comes with unexpected plot twists that I need to work around. But I'm breaking up my goals into smaller, more manageable chunks. One month at a time. One week at a time. One day at a time.

By the end of the year, hopefully, I'll see progress.

Goal-making isn't for everyone. And it's not even necessary at the beginning of the year! You can make goals anytime! Or don't even bother with goals at all! It's up to you! It's your life. Your sandbox. Do what you want! :)

I want to have fun with my writing. Ultimately, that's my main goal. I want to create stories that feel fun to me. Create worlds where I lose myself and fall in love with the characters I meet there. I want to bring joy into my life through writing.

The finished books are actually a by-product of my success with my goal of having fun with my writing. As long as I'm having fun with my writing, it really doesn't matter to me how many books I write.

Happy New Year 2023! #AuthorUpdate #WriterGoals #Resolutions

Happy New Year!

Another year is over, and a new one has begun!

Do you have any goals or resolutions?

I always make lists throughout the year with projects I want to work on and complete. While I've learned over the years not to overwhelm myself, I still give myself lofty goals hoping to inspire me.

This year, I want to keep it simple.

I want to have fun.

Somehow, during these last few years, I've pushed myself so hard that I started to not get excited about my writing time. Writing was becoming work. And that mindset wasn't helping me get my word count goals. I was becoming too concerned about what others wanted from my writing that I lost focus on what I wanted.

I started writing because I had stories to tell. Somewhere along the way, I became too concerned about the process of writing and the marketing that followed.

I realized recently, that writing wasn't feeling fun anymore. It was becoming a chore.

And like my kids, I'm not a fan of chores.

So, this year, I want to bring more fun into my writing. I want to enjoy losing myself in the worlds I create, going on adventures with these characters, and falling in love with the heroes and heroines of my stories.

My goal this year is to feel joy with creation!

If it's not bringing me joy, then skip! I don't need it.

I'm not going to compile a list of books that I'm going to write this year. I'm going to take it one project at a time and see how it goes. From a business viewpoint, that's probably not ideal, but I want to have fun.

Hopefully, my readers will enjoy this journey as much as I do!

So, instead, I'm adding a list of books I completed in 2022! It's not as impressive as some previous years. I didn't get as much writing done as I'd hoped. But, I'm still pleased with my accomplishments!

Some of the boxed sets were limited-time collections and are no longer available.

Here are the links for the books still available at this time...

Writing Regrets #IWSG #writinglife

The first Wednesday of every month is officially

The Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It's a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

IWSG Asks: What's the one thing about your writing career you regret the most? Were you able to overcome it?

Hindsight is 20/20, they say. And that's true for my writing career, too. I've been writing since I was a young teenager, actively pursuing publishing by the time I was 18. I had no mentors. I didn't go to college or university for a writing degree. Other than my English teachers and a Creative Writing teacher I had in high school, my writing and marketing knowledge is basically self-taught. In my 20s, I did take a few writing workshops from which I benefited greatly, but looking back, I wish I would have done more.

My greatest regret: My lack of self-confidence.

I had (and let's face it, continue to struggle) with low self-esteem. I know I'm not the only one. There are many of us out there. Although I believed in my talent and pushed myself, I had great doubt that I'd ever amount to anything in the publishing world. My writing was good, but maybe it wasn't good enough.

The world was different back then. This was before self-publishing. Internet was only just new to households and I didn't even have a computer other than the one I used at my aunt's house. I didn't have much support other than the encouragement of my family. And I believed then (and still do), that they only told me that my writing was wonderful because they loved me. My grandmother actively read my work, which pleased me to no end, and she was probably my greatest supporter before she passed away. (I wish she had been alive to see me get on the USA Today Bestseller list! Oh, she would have been shouting the news to everyone! I can just imagine! lol)

Now, with the help of Facebook and Twitter (oh, and let's not forget MySpace where I got my social media start!), I've connected online with many other authors and writers, including those in the Insecure Writer's Suppor Group. I continue to learn a great deal from them. Knowledge, support, craft and techniques, even a shoulder to cry on when the occasion warrants. I've learned I'm not the only one with this self-esteem issue.

My greatest regret stemming from this issue is not writing more because of my self-doubt. I wish I would have believed in myself more, wrote more stories, sent more submissions out to agents and publishers, not obsessed over every single scene wondering how I could make it better. I wish I wouldn't have hesitated so much about writing a certain series or a book because I might not be able to do it justice as a writer. I wish I would have not worried so much.

Have I overcome this?

To a degree. I have much more confidence in myself these days, but I think that also comes with age and wisdom. I know more now at 43 than I did at 23. In the past 4 years, I've written and published more stories and books than I have in my entire career.

I've learned and experienced a great deal in my life and I'm so grateful I had those opportunities, both the good and the bad. It all amounts to life experience and I can see how its helped shape my writing. It's made me stronger, more confident, wiser, and more fearless of the many possibilities.

So, I guess, yeah. I'm doing okay. I try not to think of the would've's and could've's too much. Regret can foster bitterness, and I don't want that. We're all on a journey. Traveling at our own pace. Learning as we go. Looking back at the past is useful only if we can apply that wisdom to the now and the future. In that respect, yes, I've definitely overcome this. And I hope to continue.

Happy writing!

Tricia

Happy New Year 2022! #goals #NewYearsResolutions #writinggoals

2022! Can you believe it!?

I'm still blinking my eyes that 2021 is gone already. Where did that year go!?

Now, that the new year has arrived, it's time for me to think yet again about my goals and resolutions. Of which, I have many. Let's face it, I'm an overachiever, but also a procrastinator. Yeah. Not an ideal combination! Somehow I manage to squeak by, so here's hoping I manage it for 2022, too!

I've learned in the last few years that I don't like to make announcements of the books I'm writing until I'm actually finished writing them. I've had more than enough trouble with some books. I start them, and then something happens that it's not working, or life gets in the way, or insert-problem-here, and the book is delayed. Sometimes weeks, sometimes months. That's why I don't like to set up preorders unless the book is finished, edited and has a cover. Otherwise, there are just no guarantees!

This also goes with boxed sets! I've recently had a few multi-author boxed sets fall apart because the coordinator(s) had something (again insert-problem-here moment) happen, and the sets just fell apart. And I understand! Life happens! But, I don't want to tell my readers about a project and get their hopes up unless I see that preorder up and ready to go!

That being said, I'm participating in plenty more boxed sets this year (as long as we're all good to go!), as well as quite a few of my own projects.

The first few months of the year are already filled up! Alpha Shifters Furever will be releasing February
1, 2022, followed by Shifting Hearts on February 28, 2022. There's also a paranormal romance freebie in the works, but I don't have a release date for that one, yet.

After that, I have a schedule filled with more sets, but some of the release dates are uncertain. I'll announce them when I have a firm date. Altogether, (if things go well), I'm looking at possibly ten multi-author boxed set collections this year. I believe nearly all of them are paranormal romance or sci-fi romance with maybe a few historical paranormal romances thrown here or there.

Readers have been asking for the Cougar Shifters!

What happened? Why is there only one book? Does Cody get a story?

That series has caused me enough trouble that I'm using it as a great learning experience. I wrote the books out of order! Not intentionally, but when I realized it, I knew I couldn't release them until I had them in the proper order. Which meant a major delay. My many apologies! Now, I have them sorted. I have two more to go in the series, but I'm waiting for my cover designer to create her fantastic covers (I love her work!), and then I'll get them set up for preorder ASAP.

I'm also challenging myself with a rather new writing venture. I started writing for Kindle Vella late last year. I began releasing my dystopian paranormal romance, Into the Dark, in late November. There are currently 10 episodes available to read (the first 3 are FREE!), with more to come!

I hope you'll join me on this adventure! And if you do, please like the episodes and follow. It's the only way I'll know if you're enjoying it and want more!

Okay, well, that was a lot! And there will be more to come this year, maybe even an unexpected story or two. Who knows!? I never know where the muse will take me! :)

Thank you for reading! As always, I'm ever so grateful for your continued support!

Happy New Year!

Much love,
Tricia

2021 Year in Review #AuthorUpdate

Well, it's that time of year when people reflect on the year's progress and successes. 2021 has swept by in the blink of an eye! While I didn't get all of my goals met (I had a lot of them!), I did achieve quite a few successes that I'm grateful for, and I'd like to share them with you. After all, I wouldn't be anywhere without my readers. I can't even express my gratitude in words! That's how much you mean to me!

So, here's a list of my published books this year. Some of the boxed set collections were only limited edition and are no longer available, but I plan to re-publish the stories I contributed when the time is right (meaning when I get covers that I'm satisfied with!).

Her Haunted Valentine (Oops! I forgot to add this to the graphic!)

Of those books published, one of them made it onto the USA Today Besteller's List (a first for me!), as well as an Amazon and International bestseller!

This happened in August 2021, but I am still so excited that we achieved this! It's been a dream of mine to make this list and to see it finally happen was more than wonderful! Again, my many, many thanks to the readers who helped make this happen!

I also keep track of my word count, made easier since I began writing with 4thewords! This is an online game where you battle monsters by writing to hit word counts. It's very effective at increasing your word count as I like to earn tokens to buy my avatar new clothes. My kids help me dress my avatar so it's almost like a family game. And now we have a house to decorate, too! And outside land, too! It's really fun! :)

Here are a few looks for our avatars!
You can find more on Pinterest. I wanted a way to save some of the ones we really loved!

Well, I think that's it! Here's hoping for a fantastic year for 2022!

I wish you a happy, safe and healthy New Year!!

Favorite Writing Craft Books #IWSG #writing

The first Wednesday of every month is officially

The Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It's a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

IWSG Asks: What is your favorite writing craft book? Think of a book that every time you read it you learn something or you are inspired to write or try the new technique. And why?

As always, when asked about my favorite book, I have more than one. I mean, is it possible for any avid reader to have only ONE favorite book??

I enjoy reading writing craft books. Not only to learn something new, but I like to discover how other writers write. What's their process? How do they do it?

I'll limit this list to the books that I like to re-read. I suppose that's as good as saying they are my favorite, right?

This is at the top of my list because it's the first one that popped into my head. I learned about this book through a workshop by Debra Dixon. She was fascinating! I learned so much about conflict and really enjoyed reading her book.

Goal, motivation, and conflict are the foundation of everything that happens in the story world. Using charts, examples, and movies, the author breaks these key elements down into understandable components and walks the reader through the process of laying this foundation in his or her own work.

Learn what causes sagging middles and how to fix them, which goals are important, which aren’t and why, how to get your characters to do what they need for your plot in a believable manner, and how to use conflict to create a good story. GMC can be used not only in plotting, but in character development, sharpening scenes, pitching ideas to an editor, and evaluating whether an idea will work.

Be confident your ideas will work before you write 200 pages.

Plan a road map to keep your story on track.

Discovery why your scenes aren’t working and what to do about it.

Create characters that editors and readers will care about.

Check it out!

Here's another one I read in my early days of becoming a writer. Excellent book for coming up with character types! Organized and easy to research, also entertaining to read!

All fiction writers want to write stories with great heroes and heroines--characters who leap off the page and capture the reader's imagination. Heroic characters can be broken down into sixteen archetypes. By following the guidelines of the archetypes presented in this comprehensive reference work, writers can create extraordinarily memorable characters and elevate their writing to a higher level. Throughout the book, the authors give examples of well-known heroes and heroines from television and film so the reader can picture the archetype in his or her mind.

At the very core of a character, every hero can be traced back to one of the eight major archetypes, as can every heroine. The core archetype tells the writer the most basic instincts of heroes or heroines - how they think and feel, what drives them and how they reach their goals. Whether you are a seasoned professional or a novice, The Complete Writer's Guide to Heroes & Heroines will help you improve your own writing and help you create truly memorable characters.

Check it out!

As we're already talking about characters, I'll add this one, too. I was amazed by this book! So much that I couldn't put it down and read it fairly quickly. As well as helping me with my characters, I think I might have delved into analyzing my own mind with this one.

Psychotherapist Rachel Ballon teaches the reader how to use the principles of psychology to understand their characters better. Through a mix of instruction, examples, and writing and visualization exercises, readers learn how to tap into their own stories and emotions to create realistic, complex characters.

Check it out!

Once I knew I wanted to become a writer and take writing seriously, this was one of the first books I read about story structure. It was educational and easy to read. With the examples being compared to popular movies, I enjoyed learning about story writing and often re-read this book again and again. I always seem to learn something new.

Originally an influential memo Vogler wrote for Walt Disney Animation executives regarding The Lion King, The Writer’s Journey details a twelve-stage, myth-inspired method that has galvanized Hollywood’s treatment of cinematic storytelling. A format that once seldom deviated beyond a traditional three-act blueprint, Vogler’s comprehensive theory of story structure and character development has met with universal acclaim, and is detailed herein using examples from myths, fairy tales, and classic movies. This book has changed the face of screenwriting worldwide over the last 25 years, and continues to do so.

Check it out!

This is one of my favorite books to read about writing fast! Always inspiring! Before I read this book, I always considered myself a slow writer. I never realized that a writer could actually write fast. This book helps with motivation. For me, anyway. I like to push myself to keep writing and do more because of what I learned in this book.

Have you ever wanted to double your daily word counts? Do you sometimes feel like you're crawling through your story? Do you want to write more every day without increasing the time you spend writing or sacrificing quality? It's not impossible, it's not even that hard. This is the book explaining how, with a few simple changes, I boosted my daily writing from 2000 words to over 10k a day, and how you can too.

Expanding on her highly successful process for doubling daily word counts, this book, a combination of reworked blog posts and new material, offers practical writing advice for anyone who's ever longed to increase their daily writing output. In addition to updated information for Rachel's popular 2k to 10k writing efficiency process, 5 step plotting method, and easy editing tips, this new book includes chapters on creating characters that write their own stories, practical plot structure, and learning to love your daily writing. Full of easy to follow, practical advice from a commercial author who doesn't eat if she doesn't produce good books on a regular basis, 2k to 10k focuses not just on writing faster, but writing better, and having more fun while you do it.

Check it out!

It's difficult to pick just one Chris Fox book that is my favorite. He has several books that I've read and learned a lot about writing and marketing. He also has a YouTube channel where he talks about writing that I frequently watch. His series Write Faster, Write Smarter is very inspiring!

Are you tired of writing intermittently? Would you like to install a lifelong writing habit, one that gets your butt in the chair every single day? Then this is the book for you. Lifelong Writing Habit draws on well tested neuroscience to help you install a daily writing habit that will endure for life.

It contains a simple to understand system, with actionable steps at the end of every chapter. You'll learn:

- How to install a permanent writing habit

- How to get organized

- How to set and achieve writing goals

- How to harness discipline and motivation

It’s time to make a permanent shift in your writing. Let’s get moving!

Check it out!

Happy writing!

2021 Goals #LongandShortReviews #BlogChallenge

This week's topic: My Goals for 2021

I wasn't going to write a New Year's Resolution this year because last year Covid-19 interrupted my plans (I had been doing really well losing weight until the pandemic began!). But that's not to say I don't have goals for this year.

My writing goals continue. I've already signed contracts for several boxed sets for this year and I have my ongoing series that I want to continue.

My goal is to write as much as possible and enjoy myself while doing it. I love writing! It's really like playtime for me. And I want to succeed financially with my writing. You know, be able to pay bills and buy food. That living thing that we all must do. :)

I wrote about what I have coming up this year in a blog post last week which you can read here.

I have several boxed sets that I've joined with other authors this year. I'm also going to be writing more in The Cougar Shifters series. I have another sci-fi romance series I'm working on. Plus, I have a few standalone novellas that I'll be publishing throughout the year.

It promises to be a busy year as long as we don't have any unknown disasters strike such as alien invasions or a zombie apocalypse. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and I'm focusing on happy thoughts. We don't need another 2020. Happy thoughts, y'all! Stay healthy and keep a positive attitude!

New Year, New Goals 2019 #AuthorUpdate #NewYearResolutions

Usually I blog about my New Year's Resolutions within the first week of the New Year, but I needed to take some time to evaluate my goals. I looked over my many accomplishments for 2017. You can see that post here. This year I have a lot more planned. I'm more ambitious than ever and I hope to make 2019 a successful year!

I haven't announced this yet, but I've recently signed a contract for two new romance novels to be released in a boxed set collection. I've had stories published in anthologies, but these will be my first boxed sets, so I'm eager to see how different these projects are from each other. I'm very excited to be a part of this!

I've mentioned before that I want to dip my toes into self-publishing. Well, this is the year I'm taking the plunge. I've been writing like crazy this last year and I've collected several stories that I want start releasing. I'm gathering a list of beta readers. If you're interested in reading unpolished stories with a critical eye, you can shoot me an e-mail to request being part of my list. All of my stories are romance, but I write in several subgenres. To date, the stories are paranormal, historical, gothic, sci-fi, contemporary, fantasy and apocalyptic. If you're interested in a specific subgenre, also mention that in your email.

Okay, so moving on to my goals.

This year, I plan to...

  • Publish these nearly finished books
    • Regency Paranormal Romance about a werewolf - included in the Boxed Set
    • Paranormal Romance - TBA - included in the Boxed Set
    • Paranormal Romance with Witches and Zombies
    • Paranormal Romance with Cougar Shapeshifters
    • Victorian Paranormal Romance with a Ghost
    • Fantasy Romance set in Middle Ages
    • Contemporary Holiday Romance
    • Historical Romance with Pirates (possibly - this one needs more work than the others)
  • Write 2 - 3 new novels
    • Sci-fi Romance with an Alien
    • Paranormal Romance with Witches and Zombies (Book 2)
    • TBA - I want to leave this open for that moment when inspiration hits
  • Blog more regularly
    • Last year I participated in the Insecure Writer's Support Group (#IWSG) and Marketing For Romance Writers (#MFRWAuthors). While these two groups and their monthly/weekly posts kept me somewhat consistent with blogging, I want to add more content for my readers. This year I want to continue those posts and re-introduce guest bloggers and author/book spotlights. These posts were always popular in the past. I also plan to write more content about my books, writing, research and personal life/interests. Also, more #BookReviews. Readers love those posts and I love reading more books!
  • Learn more about Marketing
    • Read more Marketing books
    • Attend Workshops and Conferences
    • Research Marketing websites
  • Network with Authors and Readers
    • Guest Blogging/Author Spotlights/Book Spotlights
    • Join Blog Hops and other events
    • More Giveaways! Readers are important to me and I want them to know it!
  • And most importantly...

This seems like an ambitious list and I hope I can achieve all or most of it. I'm pretty flexible, so I'm constantly rearranging my plans and schedules. That's mostly because I have 4 kids who keep me busy.

What are your goals for 2019? I'd love to hear about them!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Checking Off Goals on the Path to Success #IWSG #writinggoals

The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day.
The Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

IWSG Asks: What are your ultimate writing goals, and how have they changed over time (if at all)?

Everyone has their own version of success and their individual way to reach that ultimate goal. It's rare to hear overnight success stories that are truly overnight. Typically, those "overnight" success stories took years to reach. And to reach that success, those people used mini-goals as stepping stones on their path.

A writer has to take mini-steps on their path to writing a book such as writing a page a day to reach a goal of 365 pages. A runner takes mini-steps before running a marathon such as running short distances and then gradually increasing that each time they run until they can reach that marathon length goal.

It's mostly about determination and plain stubbornness as well as having a successful mindset. Do you want to succeed? How badly do you want it? Do you want it enough to work at it for a long, long time? Whatever ultimate goal you have will undoubtedly take longer than overnight to reach. But, by creating mini-goals that lead up to that ultimate goal, you can give yourself a list of successes on that long path.

My ultimate writing goal is to have a successful writing career. My version of success is to be able to pay my bills with the money I make from writing. Financial independence is nice.

As my ultimate writing goal has remained the same over the years, I've had many mini-goals that I hope will one day lead to that major success.

These are a few of the items I've accomplished on my goal check-list over the years that I believe will help me reach my ultimate writing goal to make money with my books.

  • To write a well-crafted novel - I simply wrote for fun for many years before deciding to study the craft of writing, so it took some time before I felt confident that I had the ability to write something that didn't belong in a box under my bed.
  • To submit a manuscript to a major publisher - I submitted my first partial manuscript to Dorchester Publishing when I was 18. I got a very nice rejection letter with helpful tips to make my writing stronger. The editor encouraged me to keep trying.
  • To submit a story to a writing contest - I had submitted several poems that won awards and honorable mentions, but I was ecstatic to get 3rd place for the Gothic Romance Writer's Haunted Hearts Contest in 2008.
  • To have my own author website - Shortly after I got "the call" from my editor at The Wild Rose Press, I invested money in myself by buying a domain name and creating a website for my books. You can check out my website and let me know what you think.
  • To create and maintain a blog - I've been blogging for years. I believe this has helped me reach readers, but it's also connected me with other writers and authors which is a wonderful community where I can network and feel welcome.
  • To publish a series - The Wild Rose Press has published The Merriweather Witches, my Regency-era paranormal romance series.

There are still many mini-goals on my list that I haven't reached, yet. I hope to add them to the accomplished column one day soon! The way to reach success is to get there one step at a time!

Good luck!

New Goals for 2017 - Author Update #newyear #resolutions

With the start of a New Year, comes a time of reflection and planning. We often look back over the last year to evaluate what we've achieved or didn't achieve. Then we look forward to the coming year and the infinite possibilities that it brings.

Good-bye 2016

From what I understand, 2016 has been an extremely tough year for many of us for different reasons. Aside from the long list of celebrity deaths that seemed to occur on a clockwork basis, I've talked to many people who've had a rough year, too. From losing jobs to failing health, there are many of my friends who needed some extra prayers and positive thoughts sent their way to help them cope.

In the Schneider household, we had our share of difficulties. My husband was in a motorcycle accident and had 2 separate surgeries, all of which put him out of work with no pay. Not such an easy thing for a growing family. I won't even begin to discuss the most recent discovery of the theft of royalties from the ARe debacle. You can read about that here and here. That hit many authors, publishers and readers quite severely. To add to the struggle of having a reduced income was the string of bad luck concerning our appliances. The list of broken down appliances is almost amusing. Two air conditioners, a dehumidifier for an overly damp basement and the washing machine broke down exactly a week prior to the dryer as if they had conspired together to make life as challenging as possible for us. I've been spending a small fortune at the local laundromat for several months. I'm there with my kids several hours each week to clean clothes for 6 people. If I had the chance to save that money instead, I might've been able to buy 3 or 4 washers and dryers by now.

C'est la vie.

On the bright side, I've managed to keep a positive outlook on every negative thing that happened using my talent of viewing the world through rose-colored glasses. In addition to that, there were some good things that happened in 2016, too. I dipped my toes into a new romance genre this year. The Pirate's Lady was published in November, my first historical romance with nary a hint of a paranormal element present. It was quite an accomplishment for me and it was educational to work with a new-to-me editor.

Also, I completed NaNoWriMo for the first time. Well, actually the second time. I completed it with a 65,000 word gothic novel the first year I joined the challenge, but never had the chance to verify the word count since my computer crashed on the last day of November. This year, I managed 52,209 words for Loving Boone, my newest WIP and it was verified.

Reviewing the lovely word count tracker that I obtained from the talented Svenja Gosen last year, I wrote a total of 97,485 words during 2016. Just a little shy of my goal of 100,000 words, but I'll take it. Besides writing most of Loving Boone, I'm in the midst of writing an untitled alien romance which is where most of the other words came from and I edited and revised an untitled paranormal romance featuring zombies.

Not too bad.

Goals for 2017

Looking forward to a new year brings with it a list of new goals. I have some personal goals such as finish incomplete projects around the house, get better organized and try to teach my kids better organization (I can hear parents laughing as you read this!), as well as some goals I didn't finish last year. I want to further my study of the German language and my guitar lessons sort of got set aside. I'm teaching myself to play and my 20 month-old son loves music and thinks my guitar is a toy for him to play with. Trying to find the right notes at the same time as keeping his little paws off the instrument presents a unique challenge.

As for my writing...

I found my writing groove during NaNo this last November. I write during my son's afternoon nap time. That gives me about an hour or two each day to work in relative peace and quiet (at least on the days the rest of my brood is in school). I write new words in the afternoon and work on edits in the morning or at night.

If I plan it correctly, I have the opportunity for a productive year.

  • Edit and/or revise Loving Boone
  • Finish writing the first draft of the Untitled Alien Romance
  • Complete edits for the Untitled Paranormal Romance with Zombies
  • Write a new novella for Camp NaNo 2017
  • Write a new novel for NaNoWriMo 2017
  • And, of course, I have a long list of books that I'd like to read and review

I have a few other WIP's that might join this list later in the year. I'm also considering joining the self-published author community this year. The wonderfully successful spec-fic author and my dear friend, Ash Krafton, has offered to help me through this big step in my career once I was ready. I'm thinking this year I might take the plunge.

Here's hoping everyone enjoys a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous 2017!

Happy New Year!
