2021 Year in Review #AuthorUpdate

Well, it's that time of year when people reflect on the year's progress and successes. 2021 has swept by in the blink of an eye! While I didn't get all of my goals met (I had a lot of them!), I did achieve quite a few successes that I'm grateful for, and I'd like to share them with you. After all, I wouldn't be anywhere without my readers. I can't even express my gratitude in words! That's how much you mean to me!

So, here's a list of my published books this year. Some of the boxed set collections were only limited edition and are no longer available, but I plan to re-publish the stories I contributed when the time is right (meaning when I get covers that I'm satisfied with!).

Her Haunted Valentine (Oops! I forgot to add this to the graphic!)

Of those books published, one of them made it onto the USA Today Besteller's List (a first for me!), as well as an Amazon and International bestseller!

This happened in August 2021, but I am still so excited that we achieved this! It's been a dream of mine to make this list and to see it finally happen was more than wonderful! Again, my many, many thanks to the readers who helped make this happen!

I also keep track of my word count, made easier since I began writing with 4thewords! This is an online game where you battle monsters by writing to hit word counts. It's very effective at increasing your word count as I like to earn tokens to buy my avatar new clothes. My kids help me dress my avatar so it's almost like a family game. And now we have a house to decorate, too! And outside land, too! It's really fun! :)

Here are a few looks for our avatars!
You can find more on Pinterest. I wanted a way to save some of the ones we really loved!

Well, I think that's it! Here's hoping for a fantastic year for 2022!

I wish you a happy, safe and healthy New Year!!

Author Year In Review ~ Life & Writing in 2018

Good-bye 2018!

Personal Life

Lessons Learned

This has been a difficult year, one that I'm relieved to put behind me. Life changed in a big way for me and my children. I'm officially a single mom with four kids between the ages of 12 and 3. I won't go into the gory details of my upcoming divorce because it's just too painful. But, with therapy, I've come to realize that I'm better off now. My stress and anxiety has lowered in significant ways and I have a more positive mindset. This was a year where I learned lessons the hard way. Twenty-three years is a long time and my heart was injured to such a degree that it will probably take an equally long time to heal, but if other women can heal from something like this, then I know I can, too.

Those I Lost

As if that wasn't enough to make a year heart-breaking, my family lost two incredibly wonderful and dear friends.

Chris Angelo passed away from injuries sustained in a car accident a few weeks after my husband left. Chris was my kid's Cubmaster, Baseball coach and the father of my 11 year-old son's best friend. He was such an integral part of our community that his death affected the entire town. In addition to Cub Scouts and baseball, he was also a soccer coach and played an important role for his church and their Youth Group. He was a wonderful husband to his wife, Jean, father to 3 fantastic boys and a great friend who had an infectious laugh and a smile that lit the room whenever he entered. He will always, always be missed.

Another of my dear friends that we lost was Melissa Beadle. She was an ex-co-worker from Waldenbooks. I met her with my first position with Waldenbooks as Seasonal Bookseller. She was Assistant Manager and helped train me. Shortly later, I was hired at a different Waldenbooks location and worked my way up to Assistant Manager there. After Melissa's store closed due to company downsizing, my manager hired her on in our store. It was such a pleasure to work with her again. She was another one who always had a smile and her laugh was loud and heartfelt. She always had a certain glow about her that was almost ethereal. Once we started working again in the same store, we found such common interests together that I felt like we connected in a spiritual way. We both absolutely loved books (of course!) and the supernatural. Labyrinth was our favorite movie because of, well, David Bowie! We shared a lot of favorites with music and we were fascinated by nature. She became a nature photographer, as well as a professional in holistic healing specializing in essences and essential oils. After Waldenbooks closed, we still remained close friends, meeting at Dunkin Donuts and taking bus trips to New York. She was always the first person I messaged when I needed advice on my cats or my spiritual health. Since she's been gone, I still feel like her spirit is with me, but I miss her so much. She was also the mother of two gorgeous children.

Words just cannot express the depth of my grief after losing these two beautiful friends.

Writing Career

Strangely enough, although my personal life was a mess, my writing career blossomed. I wrote more this year than I have in the last few years. Perhaps once the stress of living with such negativity was lifted, it freed my creative soul? For whatever reason, my word count and project list increased this year.

This year I...

  • signed 4 contracts
  • wrote 2 new stories
  • published 3 stories
  • worked on edits and rewrites for 3 stories which I plan to self-publish in 2019
  • wrote 38 blog posts
  • participated in several contests
  • increased social media followers and fans
  • read 31 books (my goal was 24)
  • reviewed 10 books and posted on either my blog, Goodreads or Amazon

I lost track of my word count, but considering the amount of work that I did this year, I know it surpassed last year. I did not participate in NaNoWriMo this year because of suffering double pneumonia for nearly the entire month of November. And my kids were sick that month, too, so I didn't push myself.

All in all, I think I did a decent job considering the amount of emotional turmoil I suffered this year. I'm glad I kept track of these things. Looking back, I feel that I accomplished a lot despite the trials I faced. And I have two new angels watching over me.

Books Published

To Kiss a Pirate, an erotic historical romance, is included in Pirates: A Boys Behaving Badly Anthology

Searching for treasure on a lush Caribbean island, a woman disguising herself as a cabin boy is confronted by her sexy and suspicious pirate captain.

***

Sail on the high seas or into uncharted galaxies! When it comes to love...pirates risk all! Delilah's next delectable anthology is filled with roguish pirates! Readers who crave adventures set on the high seas--or in deep space--will find plenty of sexy bad boys, naughty alpha males unafraid to risk life and limb for treasure--or a lucky lover's heart!

Just a few of the titillating stories inside...

In "The Treasure of Devil's Crag" by Lisa Fox, two rival pirate captains seeking the same treasure, discover the competition isn't the only thing that heats up between them. A modern-day pirate boards a yacht seeking revenge and captures a runaway bride who tempts him in ways he's never experienced in January George's "Captive Desire." In T.D. Rudolph's "Lust in Space", a space criminal teams up with a fearless vamp to steal a cache of titanium--from the dark side of the moon. In "Full Fathom Five" by Rhidian Brenig Jones, a pirate captain, forced to give a disgraced young surgeon a berth, discovers a rich treasure in the other man's arms. And this is just a hint at the sexy stories inside this satisfying volume.

These pirates will pillage and plunder their way into your hearts!

Cupid's Arrow, a sweet sci-fi romance, is included in A Wink and a Smile: A Read on the Run Anthology

A wedding, a bridesmaid, gaudy Cupid decorations, and an out-of-this-world handsome stranger who is simply too good to be true.

***

In this Read on the Run title, we present eighteen romances. Not love stories, although some of them do include aspects of that. But whereas love stories are often sad, each of the selections in A Wink and a Smile has either a "happily-ever-after" ending, or at least a strong suggestion that this is where the characters are heading.

That doesn't mean these tales all sound the same; to the contrary, we've found quite a diverse collection of romances. Yes, there are some traditional romances, and there's a healthy handful of budding romances, but you will also find a story set in the future, and a couple of fantasy tales. You will find stories of pastries, and candies, of young lovers and old. You will meet several matchmakers and you'll see couples reconcile, and there are even a few stories that will make you laugh.

As always, each story in the Read on the Run series of anthologies is short to suit your busy lifestyle.

Eve's Garden, a sweet paranormal romance, is included in A Kiss and a Promise Anthology

A new homeowner rediscovers forgotten love in a haunted house.

***

The six romances included in this anthology have quirky characters, or quirky locations, or quirky situations. You'll find a ghost and a new homeowner, a spaceship captain and her cartographer, a window designer and high school beau, a banker and a baker, two vampire hunters, and some supernatural beings. You'll find yourself in two different restaurants, and on another planet. You'll find deception, intrigue, and old memories. You'll find Happily-Ever-Afters, and you'll find Happy-For-Nows. But, most of all, you'll find true romance. You'll find kisses, and you'll find promises.

2015 Writing Goals

It's that time of year again! The time when we take stock of last year's accomplishments and plan ahead for the new year's goals.

Last year I planned to write 1000 words a day. Unfortunately, I fell short of my goal since I failed to write every day. However, I still managed to get a lot done with which I was pleased. This year, I'm going to renew my writing goal with 250 words a day. This is roughly about 15 minutes of writing time every day. I can't think of enough excuses to get out of this one. And these can be the crappiest 250 words I've ever written, just as long as I write them!

For me its all about keeping the habit of writing every day whether I feel like it, whether I think I have time for it, or not. My writing is mostly sporadic. I can write religiously every day for weeks. And then suddenly, for weeks I don't write a single word.

I have all sorts of excuses. Dirty dishes, dirty laundry, well, dirty house in general. Usually, this is the one that gets me. I can't stand seeing my house in such a messy state! But now that my children are getting older, I'm giving them chores to alleviate some of the burden from my shoulders. During the last 2 weeks (our trial run!), it seems to have helped a lot. Instead of picking up after everyone, putting stuff away, and constantly cleaning, I have a little more free time to work on those projects that have been sitting on my shelf for months/years. And with a husband who works long hours (and doesn't offer much in help at home) and 3 children (with another on the way), its an incredible relief to have help. My children are wonderful helpers! As long as they keep up with it!

Anyway, back to my goals. I've joined a group of like-minded writers on Facebook who are also committed to writing every day. I'm hoping that if I have to check in with them everyday, it will also help keep me motivated to get the writing done.

In addition to writing new words, I also have a list of manuscripts that I've been hopping to and from. This is typically how I work, as frustrating as it is. I work on one manuscript, then bounce to another. Eventually, they all get done, but it takes longer than if I just stuck with one at a time. Some need a bit of polish, some need more work, but I want to get them finished and sent off to my editor's desk. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll have another contract or two by the end of the year.

Here's my list:

  • Write at least 250 words a day
  • Edit at least 5 pages a day
  • Contemporary holiday romance
    8000
    3rd draft
    Urban Fantasy
    9000
    3rd draft
    Contemporary Paranormal Romance w/ghosts
    15,000
    Revisions needed
    Historical Pirate Romance
    15,000
    Revisions needed
    Historical Paranormal Romance w/witches
    25,000
    Finish 1st draft
    Paranormal Romance w/zombies
    65,000
    2nd draft
    Historical Paranormal Romance w/ghosts
    65,000
    Revisions needed
    Historical Paranormal Romance w/ghosts
    65,000
    2nd draft
    Romance
    65,000
    New Story
    Romance
    20,000
    New Story
So, there it is! Possibly a bit ambitious. I think the editing and the revisions are far easier than the actual writing itself, so I know if I work a little every day this can be accomplished. Wish me luck!

Do you make a list of goals for the New Year? What are some of your goals for 2015?

One Writer's 2014 Year Review

Let's be honest here. I make a list of goals every year. It's that New Year's tradition thing. Since I usually make an incredibly long list of impossible goals for myself, at the beginning of 2014 I decided to go easy on myself. My goal was to write 1000 words a day. This seemed doable since my writing days typically concluded with 2000 words.

However, the trouble I encounter each year is that I don't write every day. This year was no different. I'm a sporadic writer. I write great chunks for many days in a row and then a few weeks go by with nothing. There are many factors involved here...family and my own mind being the biggest two. I have 3 small children and a husband who worked a job that took him away from home for months at a time. Essentially, I was a single mother who occasionally lacks self-confidence as a writer. This is no excuse, I know. Many writers are in the same situation. Many succeed and many fail. I always feel that I fall somewhere in between.

This year, I've decided to look back on my year and celebrate my accomplishments. And for the benefit of other writers who share similar struggles, I'm going to share these with you.

Writing Accomplishments

For 2014, I created a new word count spreadsheet that I did my best to follow on my writing days. For the most part, I believe I did a good job recording my results although I know there were quite a few days where I fiddled around with a story and didn't bother to write the numbers down. This is something I want to improve on for 2015.

New Stories Started in 2014
  1. Contemporary Holiday Romance =7993 (completed)
  2. Paranormal Romance w/zombies = 65,317 (completed)
  3. Paranormal Romance w/aliens = 7329 (unfinished)
  4. Urban Fantasy w/zombies = 12,088 (unfinished)
Older Stories Worked on in 2014
  1. Historical Paranormal Romance w/ghosts = 12,160 (unfinished)
  2.  WWII romance = 2142 (unfinished)
  3. Historical Paranormal Romance w/witches (The Merriweather Witches: Book 5) = Sadly, this one I didn't keep track of since I jumped around in it so much.
That gives me a total of  107,029 of new words written in 2014. That's really not so bad. I'm happy with it though I did not succeed with my goal of writing 1k a day. Still, I've never kept a yearly word count total before so for my first year keeping track I think that's a good baseline to start.

But that's not the only writing I did this year. I also keep a dream journal where I write down all the strange dreams I have at night. Often, those dreams turn into stories themselves. And since this is the first year I transcribed my dreams onto my computer instead of a paper journal it was easy to add up what I wrote.

Dream Journal Word Count = 20,696

For a Grand Total of 127,725 original words written in 2014. Again, I'm pleased with this. That averages about 350 words a day. Far from my original goal, but considering I actually didn't write every day... Well, that's what I get.

What I did not add were the various blog posts or guest blogs that I wrote for this year. I could easily add that to the count, but that's a different kind of writing for me and I feel it should be kept separate. I know other writers like to add those words in with their totals.

Publishing Accomplishments:

Book Published in 2014

I had a new release this year! In February, I celebrated the world-wide release of The Witch's Thief - Book 3 of The Merriweather Witches.

New Contract Signed!

I signed a contract with The Wild Rose Press for The Witch's Kiss - Book 4 of The Merriweather Witches in early 2014. Edits and revisions were completed over the summer and this book is now due for release sometime in early 2015.

Personal Events in 2014
  • My husband got a new job that gives him more time at home - as in every night home! We enjoy a lot more family time now which my children adore!
  • I'm an avid genealogist. Unfortunately, this contributes to time away from my writing, but I've managed to discover many new branches on my family tree this year. I also worked on scanning family photos onto the computer and recording memories for my children. This is extremely important to me.
  • My grandmother passed away on October 15, 2014. She is dearly missed! After suffering several years from dementia, I know she's happily reunited with her daughter (my mother) and her parents whom she missed. I wanted to include this here because she was a very important part of my life.

  • I'm pregnant with my 4th child! This kind of explains why for about 3 months I didn't have the energy to write or read or even clean the house. My first trimester was very rough on me. For a while, I thought I was just extremely depressed until I found out I was pregnant. That explained the lack of energy! This was an unexpected pregnancy. Although I always wanted to have a 4th child, my husband and I had come to an agreement that we were done having more kids. I gave away my maternity clothes and a lot of the baby clothes that I had been keeping over the years (just in case!). My surprise bundle of joy startled me with a total burst of shock and happiness! And it's a boy! He's due in April 2015! Now if only my husband and I can agree on a name...

So that's my year in a short blog post. In the next few days I'm going join a mass of other writers in declaring my goals and resolutions for 2015. Hopefully, I'll keep a better track record for myself during the year so I can post my accomplishments for next year!

I'd love to hear about your writing, publishing or personal accomplishments as well! It's great to share good news!
