Reading Reviews #IWSG #readers #bookreviews

The first Wednesday of every month is officially

The Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It's a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

IWSG Asks: Has any of your readers ever responded to your writing in a way that you didn't expect? If so, did it surprise you?
I don't like to admit this, but I'm such an insecure writer that any reader who responds with a positive review surprises me! I have such a bad case of imposter syndrome, I think with each book I publish readers will see what a horrible writer I am and call me out. With every 4 & 5 star review my books receive, I breathe a huge sigh of relief.

I was surprised by my first one-star review. Not because I received it, I had fully expected to find one with my debut book. That first one-star review arrived with my third book.

I was surprised by my response to it. I had been fearful of the complete and utter devastation I would inevitably feel. I was afraid I would never want to publish my books ever again because of some scathing remark from some faceless reader.

Instead, I laughed.

Yes, I laughed at my first one-star review. And surprisingly still, I continue to laugh at the critical reviews I receive. Not because I'm some diva writer who laughs in the face of adversity, but because I am so much more critical of myself. These one-star reviews can never compare to the criticism I give to myself.

Sometimes, I agree with the reviewer. They make valid points that I did not see. Yes, maybe that character wasn't as heroic as I intended. Maybe that scene did not fit the storyline. Good point. Thank you for responding.

Good reviews are great for stroking a writer's ego, but sometimes the bad reviews give a writer more insight.

Another surprise I received from a reader was when they labeled my steamy romance as sweet and wholesome in a review.

But, my paranormal romance was filled with sex scenes, hot and sensual, definitely with the bedroom door held wide open. Not what I would ever classify as a sweet romance. When I think of sweet romance, that bedroom door is held firmly closed.

I was puzzled. It took me some time to figure that one out. That's when I started discovering other books labeled as steamy sweet. It's not exactly the sex scenes that are the issue here.

The love shared between the characters is sweet, tender and wholesome. The romance where they fall in love is sweet.

But the characters also share sexy times, too!

Sweet and steamy!

Yes, I got it! That's totally what I write! It took a reader's review to make me look at my own writing in a new way.

Be safe! Stay healthy! And keep writing!

2021 Goals #LongandShortReviews #BlogChallenge

This week's topic: My Goals for 2021

I wasn't going to write a New Year's Resolution this year because last year Covid-19 interrupted my plans (I had been doing really well losing weight until the pandemic began!). But that's not to say I don't have goals for this year.

My writing goals continue. I've already signed contracts for several boxed sets for this year and I have my ongoing series that I want to continue.

My goal is to write as much as possible and enjoy myself while doing it. I love writing! It's really like playtime for me. And I want to succeed financially with my writing. You know, be able to pay bills and buy food. That living thing that we all must do. :)

I wrote about what I have coming up this year in a blog post last week which you can read here.

I have several boxed sets that I've joined with other authors this year. I'm also going to be writing more in The Cougar Shifters series. I have another sci-fi romance series I'm working on. Plus, I have a few standalone novellas that I'll be publishing throughout the year.

It promises to be a busy year as long as we don't have any unknown disasters strike such as alien invasions or a zombie apocalypse. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and I'm focusing on happy thoughts. We don't need another 2020. Happy thoughts, y'all! Stay healthy and keep a positive attitude!

New Year, New Goals 2019 #AuthorUpdate #NewYearResolutions

Usually I blog about my New Year's Resolutions within the first week of the New Year, but I needed to take some time to evaluate my goals. I looked over my many accomplishments for 2017. You can see that post here. This year I have a lot more planned. I'm more ambitious than ever and I hope to make 2019 a successful year!

I haven't announced this yet, but I've recently signed a contract for two new romance novels to be released in a boxed set collection. I've had stories published in anthologies, but these will be my first boxed sets, so I'm eager to see how different these projects are from each other. I'm very excited to be a part of this!

I've mentioned before that I want to dip my toes into self-publishing. Well, this is the year I'm taking the plunge. I've been writing like crazy this last year and I've collected several stories that I want start releasing. I'm gathering a list of beta readers. If you're interested in reading unpolished stories with a critical eye, you can shoot me an e-mail to request being part of my list. All of my stories are romance, but I write in several subgenres. To date, the stories are paranormal, historical, gothic, sci-fi, contemporary, fantasy and apocalyptic. If you're interested in a specific subgenre, also mention that in your email.

Okay, so moving on to my goals.

This year, I plan to...

  • Publish these nearly finished books
    • Regency Paranormal Romance about a werewolf - included in the Boxed Set
    • Paranormal Romance - TBA - included in the Boxed Set
    • Paranormal Romance with Witches and Zombies
    • Paranormal Romance with Cougar Shapeshifters
    • Victorian Paranormal Romance with a Ghost
    • Fantasy Romance set in Middle Ages
    • Contemporary Holiday Romance
    • Historical Romance with Pirates (possibly - this one needs more work than the others)
  • Write 2 - 3 new novels
    • Sci-fi Romance with an Alien
    • Paranormal Romance with Witches and Zombies (Book 2)
    • TBA - I want to leave this open for that moment when inspiration hits
  • Blog more regularly
    • Last year I participated in the Insecure Writer's Support Group (#IWSG) and Marketing For Romance Writers (#MFRWAuthors). While these two groups and their monthly/weekly posts kept me somewhat consistent with blogging, I want to add more content for my readers. This year I want to continue those posts and re-introduce guest bloggers and author/book spotlights. These posts were always popular in the past. I also plan to write more content about my books, writing, research and personal life/interests. Also, more #BookReviews. Readers love those posts and I love reading more books!
  • Learn more about Marketing
    • Read more Marketing books
    • Attend Workshops and Conferences
    • Research Marketing websites
  • Network with Authors and Readers
    • Guest Blogging/Author Spotlights/Book Spotlights
    • Join Blog Hops and other events
    • More Giveaways! Readers are important to me and I want them to know it!
  • And most importantly...

This seems like an ambitious list and I hope I can achieve all or most of it. I'm pretty flexible, so I'm constantly rearranging my plans and schedules. That's mostly because I have 4 kids who keep me busy.

What are your goals for 2019? I'd love to hear about them!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
~Tricia S.
