Author Envy or Inspiration #IWSG #writing #writinginspiration

The first Wednesday of every month is officially

The Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It's a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

IWSG Asks: Have you ever read a line in a novel or a clever plot twist that caused you to have author envy?

Of course, I have! There are so many books I've read where I think, "That's it. I'll never write as beautifully as that. That was amazing!"

Surprisingly, instead of discouraging me to write my own books, these authors inspire me. The better the book, the more I feel the need to write, too. Not that I want to compete. Not that. And I don't feel exactly envious. That's too negative. I admire them. I want to be like them. I want my books to be on the same shelves as those outstanding authors.

When I started my writing journey, whenever I visited a bookstore, I would check the area where my books would be located, imagining one day being published and selling my books in brick-and-mortar stores. I'd trace my finger along the shelves, searching for where my name would fall alphabetically. When I'd find it, I'd wiggle open a small space between the books where mine should be. Then I'd check to see how close I was to my favorite authors.

A few books away? Right next to mine? Maybe a shelf under or above?

It was a game I'd played, and I've heard other authors played this game, too. It must be a writer thing. :)

But it was because of the words these authors wrote, the clever plot twists and the amazing characters they created, the stories they wrote that made me want to be an author, too.

I've read so many authors that have impressed me with their writing talent, but here are a few that come to mind immediately when it comes to particularly outstanding lines.

Georgette Heyer was incredibly talented at capturing the language of the Regency era. Her books truly pull readers into that world, so much they can lose themselves in her almost poetic writing. I'm always in awe of her character's wit, humor and perfectly turned phrases.

Maggie Shayne is another one that amazes me with her storytelling abilities. Her creativity, plot twists, and characters have made her one of my favorite authors. One that is on my auto-buy list!

And Julia Quinn. I've been raving about The Bridgertons since I first read an ARC of Romancing Mr. Bridgerton during my days working at Waldenbooks. I'm ecstatic that her stories have made it onto Netflix! A dream come true for any author! And now so many more people are enjoying her stories. Her writing style flows so smoothly, and there were several moments while reading her books when I found myself emotionally teary-eyed because of her writing.

#BookReview ~ The Miracle Morning for Writers: How to Build a Writing Ritual That Increases Your Impact and Your Income (Before 8AM) by Hal Elrod #writinglife #writers

The Miracle Morning for Writers: How to Build a Writing Ritual That Increases Your Impact and Your Income (Before 8AM)
by Hal Elrod
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Need to find more time to write--without sacrificing the important things? Looking to consistently discover great book ideas? Wish you could generate a steady income from your words...or increase what you already make?

The solution to these questions is to change what you do first thing in the morning. And that's why you should read The Miracle Morning for Writers: How to Build a Writing Ritual That Increases Your Impact and Income (Before 8AM).

The Miracle Morning for Writers combines Hal Elrod's global phenomenon with Steve Scott's proven writing habit techniques (which helped him get on the Wall Street Journal bestsellers list). You learn how to take charge of your morning and maximize "the rest of the day" for your writing efforts.

Here's what you'll discover in The Miracle Morning for Writers:
How a morning routine can change every area of your life (Including your health, happiness, finances and relationships).
The proven strategy for "finding the time" to write--even if you have a full-time job.
Our method for selling lots of books (and the 8-step process to build it).
Steve's favorite app for tracking your great ideas and researching your next book.
Hal's process for overcoming the limiting beliefs that hold you back from success.
"Flow state" and how it can forever eradicate writer's block.

You will also learn:
4 business models perfect for writers, how to get started, and which one we recommend.
The 10-step process for publishing a book that readers love.
6 tools for improving your writing skills.
2 techniques for doubling (even tripling) your daily word count total.
How to find the "80/20" of your book-based business.

The Miracle Morning for Writers is your key to building a writing habit that will increase both your income and the value you provide to the world.

My Review
This book is a fantastic addition to any writer's library. Whether you're just starting out and need a how-to book with simple steps or a veteran writer who wants to add to your collection of informative writing library, this book will satisfy you both.

I've been writing for nearly two decades, and enjoyed reading the The Miracle Morning for Writers. There are several tips that I intend to try and a few that I already have. It was interesting to learn about Life S.A.V.E.R.S. and I can see how beneficial such a program can be for a morning person.

I highly recommend this book for writers as well as the other books in this series. If this one is an example of the other Miracle Morning books, then I'm sure it will help anyone who is looking to change their life for the better.

Support #SmallBusinessSaturday - Shop Indie, Shop Local #BlackFriday

I encourage you to think of small business owners this holiday season. These are the people who rely on the income from their sales to buy food for their families, pay their rent/mortgage, and heat their homes. These are authors, artists, farmers, local shop owners, and those who make hand-made jewelry and crafts. Without your support, they might not be able to continue creating these products for others to enjoy.

If you're unable to purchase anything, that's okay. Times are tough. I've been there. But there are other ways besides buying that can support small business. Tell your friends about them, like and share posts on Facebook and Twitter, follow them on social media, write reviews (even if it's just a short few lines). I promise you, small business owners will appreciate all that you can do for them!

Here are several authors in this book fair who have priced their books at #99cents for a limited time. You'll find all types of genres in this fair.

As I am one of those authors trying to provide an income to take care of my family, I am keenly aware of how much I appreciate readers like you who support us. Truly!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Checking Off Goals on the Path to Success #IWSG #writinggoals

The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day.
The Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!

IWSG Asks: What are your ultimate writing goals, and how have they changed over time (if at all)?

Everyone has their own version of success and their individual way to reach that ultimate goal. It's rare to hear overnight success stories that are truly overnight. Typically, those "overnight" success stories took years to reach. And to reach that success, those people used mini-goals as stepping stones on their path.

A writer has to take mini-steps on their path to writing a book such as writing a page a day to reach a goal of 365 pages. A runner takes mini-steps before running a marathon such as running short distances and then gradually increasing that each time they run until they can reach that marathon length goal.

It's mostly about determination and plain stubbornness as well as having a successful mindset. Do you want to succeed? How badly do you want it? Do you want it enough to work at it for a long, long time? Whatever ultimate goal you have will undoubtedly take longer than overnight to reach. But, by creating mini-goals that lead up to that ultimate goal, you can give yourself a list of successes on that long path.

My ultimate writing goal is to have a successful writing career. My version of success is to be able to pay my bills with the money I make from writing. Financial independence is nice.

As my ultimate writing goal has remained the same over the years, I've had many mini-goals that I hope will one day lead to that major success.

These are a few of the items I've accomplished on my goal check-list over the years that I believe will help me reach my ultimate writing goal to make money with my books.

  • To write a well-crafted novel - I simply wrote for fun for many years before deciding to study the craft of writing, so it took some time before I felt confident that I had the ability to write something that didn't belong in a box under my bed.
  • To submit a manuscript to a major publisher - I submitted my first partial manuscript to Dorchester Publishing when I was 18. I got a very nice rejection letter with helpful tips to make my writing stronger. The editor encouraged me to keep trying.
  • To submit a story to a writing contest - I had submitted several poems that won awards and honorable mentions, but I was ecstatic to get 3rd place for the Gothic Romance Writer's Haunted Hearts Contest in 2008.
  • To have my own author website - Shortly after I got "the call" from my editor at The Wild Rose Press, I invested money in myself by buying a domain name and creating a website for my books. You can check out my website and let me know what you think.
  • To create and maintain a blog - I've been blogging for years. I believe this has helped me reach readers, but it's also connected me with other writers and authors which is a wonderful community where I can network and feel welcome.
  • To publish a series - The Wild Rose Press has published The Merriweather Witches, my Regency-era paranormal romance series.

There are still many mini-goals on my list that I haven't reached, yet. I hope to add them to the accomplished column one day soon! The way to reach success is to get there one step at a time!

Good luck!
