I'm joining again for some Weekend Writing Warrior fun! This week's snippet comes from an upcoming new release called, The Wolf's Bride. This is a paranormal romance set in Regency England. In this scene, the heroine has broken into the hero's rooms and has a pistol pointed at him while he's reclining in a bathtub. A very vulnerable moment!

Excerpt:

"I have it on good authority that a woman was killed here last night and you are the man responsible." 

His head lifted.

"How did she die?"

"She was torn to pieces. They say she was ravaged by a wild animal."

He turned his head to the side as if to see her better, but she stood directly behind him. Madeline suspected he might see her silhouette, but he couldn't view her completely. Even if he could, he'd have difficulty identifying her with the hood of her cloak pulled low over her face.

"Why would you think I am responsible if they're saying it was an animal attack?"

"Because I know what you are."

In my last #WeWrWa excerpt, I introduced readers to Arianne. You can read that here. This week, we continue with that scene where Arianne identifies the mysterious voice that intrudes on her solitude.

Excerpt:

“What makes you think to find it here?”

Now she heard it, what she should have been on guard for earlier; the crunch of sand under boot. He
walked with slow, measured steps. She refused to leap to her feet to face him. He had caught her unawares.

She’d not let it happen again.

“Because, Love, you are here.”

She inhaled sharply and held her breath for several long seconds.

It's been quite a while since I joined the Weekend Writing Warriors. But, its a brand New Year and I have new books, and new sentences to share with readers. I hope you'll enjoy!

This short excerpt comes from my historical romance, The Pirate's Lady, where a voice from the past intrudes upon Arianne's solitude.

Excerpt:

“I’ve come for what’s mine.”

The voice came from behind. She hadn’t heard footsteps approach. The rolling waves crashing on the
shore and the stars twinkling in a black velvet sky had lulled Arianne into a dreamy trance. Her back stiffened at the sound of the voice. She tried to estimate how far away he stood from her position kneeling in the sand without turning to see.

Only a few steps she reckoned. Her hand crept to the sword on her belt. She gripped the handle, comforted by the leather covering the sturdy carved wood. The blade was sharp and deadly.

November is National Novel Writing Month. I'm participating in this world-wide event to write the rough draft of a 50,000 word story in 30 days. To help keep me motivated, I decided to share brief excerpts of my work-in-progress every Sunday throughout November. I'm currently a little behind on my word count, but I have high hopes that I'll catch up in the next few days. At least enough to have 8-10 more sentences by next Sunday! :-)

The story I'm writing is a paranormal romance with a shapeshifter hero.

"Beth-Ann, come home. Right away, honey."

"What? Dad, why?"

"It's started." 

That brief phone call was all it took for Beth-Ann Miller to leave her dorm room at campus one morning in early November to drive four hours of interstate and back roads to reach her Tennessee mountain home. The sharp tone of her father's voice haunted her the entire trip. He hadn't explained anything more. Hadn't told her what prompted his sudden and mysterious phone call. Simply ordered her to come home.

The Witch and the Ghost #8Sunday #excerpt

I've joined again with the Weekend Writing Warriors to offer a short excerpt.

This week's excerpt comes from my newest release, The Witch's Kiss, where Sage Merriweather (a witch) is preparing for an argument from Marianne Grey (a ghost).

When she stood before him, he braced himself for her anger, scorn and ire. No doubt the scathing words about to exit her mouth would cut him to the quick. He’d been the target of Marianne’s wrath numerous times in the past, but never when he deserved it as mightily as he did in this moment. 

She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound emerged. The blood drained from her face, no easy feat for an incorporeal being. Fearing she suffered from some manner of ghostly apoplexy, he tried to reach out to her, only just remembering he could not touch her moments before his hand sliced through her arm. His skin shivered where he made contact with her phantom being.

His actions managed to snap her out of whatever condition had struck her, for she quickly looked up. Only then did he realize she did not see him, but some object beyond his shoulder in the ballroom. 

“Marianne?”

In my newest soon-to-be-released novel, The Witch's Kiss, Sage Merriweather and Marianne meet with a woman who might have the answers they seek to discovering a spell to break the curse set on poor Marianne. But Miss Green is reluctant to assist witches...

 

“I have no particular reason to avoid you, Mr. Merriweather, but you are not the only being capable of acknowledging the dead. I don’t wish for anyone with that ability to happen upon me while in the company of your little witch friend who stands at your side.”

“I’m not dead,” Marianne muttered.

Sage ignored Marianne’s disgruntled indignation. Instead, he glanced at her, confused by Miss Green’s misidentification of his particular inborn talent.

“Miss Green, perhaps you misunderstand. I am a witch, too.”

“Oh no, Mr. Merriweather, that you are not. Not any longer.”

Defending Sebastian... from The Witch and the Vampire #8Sunday

“Stand aside, Miss Merriweather,” Frederick Dawes said brusquely. “The job is not done until he has a stake through his heart, and his head cut from his neck.”

Understanding dawned, and she sat up, leaning away from Sebastian as she turned to face the vampire hunter standing over him.

She looked up into his face. It was a kind face. A face showing concern for her welfare and delight over his capture. He thought to protect her from a monster, she reasoned, even as she suppressed the first murderous rage she had ever experienced. Sebastian’s hands tightened over hers as if in warning.

She opened her mouth, ready to cast a horrifying spell over the man, ready to destroy her soul to spew black magic.

Sunday Excerpt – November 10

I'm new to this 8 sentence blog hop event. In the past few weeks, I've seen many writers posting excerpts for their published books or WIP. It was fun to read those excerpts, and I discovered new books and authors by doing so. This week I decided to give it a try. Here goes...

This brief snippet is from The Witch's Thief, a Regency-era paranormal romance. Basil Merriweather has spent the morning searching the house for Julia Grey. And he's found her...

The door swung open on quiet hinges and revealed a most peculiar scene. Julia, on her hands and knees, peering under Aunt Petunia's favorite sofa. Basil's breath hitched in his chest at the sight of his beloved's derriere posed invitingly in the air. He paused at the doorway, stunned to find Julia in such a position. Although he was not surprised by his rather masculine appreciation.

"There's nothing under here," Julia proclaimed, and wriggled her bottom again as she swept her hand back and forth.

Basil nearly bit his tongue. His breeches began to feel tight.
