“What makes you think to find it here?”

Now she heard it, what she should have been on guard for earlier; the crunch of sand under boot. He
walked with slow, measured steps. She refused to leap to her feet to face him. He had caught her unawares.

She’d not let it happen again.

“Because, Love, you are here.”

She inhaled sharply and held her breath for several long seconds.

Pouring Heart & Soul into Stories #MFRWAuthor #writing

Blogging is an opportunity for authors to connect with readers. Despite being writers, blogging is an entirely different style of writing and often stumps us. To help our authors blog consistently, thoughtfully and with purpose, Marketing for Romance Writers is announcing the 2018 Blog Challenge. Each week, authors use our writing prompt to create a meaningful blog post. We'll be posting every Friday... join us as often as possible.

Week 1: "How much of myself is in my writing"

When I first began writing, I poured my entire soul into my story. I was 15 when I wrote my first novel. The story was from a dream I'd had and although I gave the main character a different name, she was basically me. Mostly, everything about her was me. I also used writing as therapy. Well, I still do! But, I was an emotional mess as a teenager, dealing with my mother's death and my father's abandonment. I had no one to help me deal with any of that trauma, so I wrote about it. I'd create a character and throw all of my life's problems at her and see how she'd deal with it. Those stories often ended with happily-ever-after because that's what I desperately wanted for myself. In doing so, I think that's part of what made me fall in love with the romance genre. There is so much sadness and grief in real life. When I read fiction, I wanted to know for certain that the characters I invest my time in are going to have a satisfying end.

As my writing skills have grown, the amount of myself has lessened somewhat as I explore other elements and possibilities of the world, but my heart and soul is still in there woven between the scenes and characters. It's rather unavoidable, I think, for a writer to put something of him/herself into their writing.

The Merriweather Witches are a result of my love for the world of the paranormal. The 1960's TV drama, Dark Shadows, introduced me to vampires, witches, werewolves and many other supernatural creatures that ignited my imagination as a young child. That fascination grew and continues to grow to this day. So far, in my stories I have written of witches, werewolves, vampires, necromancers, and demons. Those are just in my published stories. I've just submitted an alien romance for a submission call and I'm in the process of writing a romance set in a world filled with zombies.

My other obsession is history. Dark Shadows might also have influenced me with history. There was time travel in that show, too, where they went back to Colonial and Victorian times. Although I have many favorite time periods, I've become fascinated with the Regency era and everything to do with pirates. This is also revealed in my writing. My newest pirate romance, To Kiss a Pirate, will be published in Pirates: A Boys Behaving Badly anthology coming out on February 27, 2018.

This short excerpt comes from my historical romance, The Pirate's Lady, where a voice from the past intrudes upon Arianne's solitude.

Excerpt:

“I’ve come for what’s mine.”

The voice came from behind. She hadn’t heard footsteps approach. The rolling waves crashing on the
shore and the stars twinkling in a black velvet sky had lulled Arianne into a dreamy trance. Her back stiffened at the sound of the voice. She tried to estimate how far away he stood from her position kneeling in the sand without turning to see.

Only a few steps she reckoned. Her hand crept to the sword on her belt. She gripped the handle, comforted by the leather covering the sturdy carved wood. The blade was sharp and deadly.

Excerpt:

"I have a life here now."

"There's nothing for you here. Your place is by my side. In your heart, you 'tis true."

She looked away, turning her gaze to the ocean’s waves pounding the beach with hypnotic rhythm. A few moments ago, she sat here, mulling over her life’s misfortunes and attempting to reach a decision about her future.

Her fate.

Arianne shook her head. “I no longer travel your path. You sail without me, my friend.”

She pushed her bare toes into the grainy sand and stood, brushing the remaining sand that clung to her petticoats. In the silence of the crashing waves, she turned and walked away.

Inside, her heart bled. Yet, she deserved no better. Her life led to this heartache. That she walked away from this man now, after all this time only confirmed it.

“Arianne, you’re coming with me.”

His serious tone warned her of his intentions. She spun to face him, unsheathing her sword in time to block his attack. The sound of metal striking metal pierced the moonlit darkness. Her ears rang with the sound.

They stood, neither moving. She stared into his eyes. “You would take me by force?”

“Never by force,” his voice lowered to a growl. “You will come willingly.” And he
smiled, that knowing one she hated.

She let out a howl of outrage and swung her sword. He easily blocked. They stepped
a deadly dance of striking blades, until again they were trapped by heated gazes.

Her breathing was heavy, labored, filled with excitement. She looked at his lips, wanting to taste them but knowing she dared not. Her will was never strong around him. With one touch she might lose herself and want him again for forever. But that dream would never be achievable with Marco.

With him, she’d always be alone.

“Come with me, Arianne.”

“No.”

She pushed away and again they danced. Her feet moved lightly as she sprang, her petticoats swirling with each movement though she hoped they would not entangle her legs. Her arm swung with lithe movements as she fought. She equaled him with skill and grace. Each time their swords clashed, the noise pierced her soul. That she fought him was a testament to her determination to escape his tyranny over her heart. She could not succumb to him again.

As they battled, a sheen of sweat appeared upon his brow. The exposed skin of his chest glistened in the moonlight. His arms flexed as he swung his sword. His grace, his power, his energy seduced her.

Her heart pounded. Her skin ached to touch his. The heat in her lower regions grew to a fiery inferno. She trembled.

Again, they locked blades.

They stood a moment, staring. His gaze burned into her soul. She licked the salty sweat from her upper lip, and his eyes followed the movement with utter fascination.

He pushed their swords away. With his free hand, he grabbed her shoulder, pulling her tight against his chest. Arianne tilted her head to look into his eyes. The blue depths called to her, like the ocean’s waves licking at her feet. The yearning to go to him was too great. She hadn’t the will to fight.

New Contract, New Opportunities #HistoricalRomance #WIP

I'm super excited to announce that I've recently signed a new contract with The Wild RosePress to publish my historical romance tentatively titled, The Pirate's Lady.

This is a step in a new direction for me.

My books are primarily paranormal romances, however The Pirate's Lady will be straight historical romance without even a hint of supernatural goings-on!

Shocking, I know!

My readers and friends know that I am a huge paranormal lover, so what's with the change of scenery?

Well, it's exactly that. A change of scenery. A chance to let my writing muscles grow and perhaps to reach a new audience. I'm avidly interested in history. I've done immense amounts of research into many time periods that I've yet to dip my publishing toe into. I have several works-in-progress stories set in various time periods and locales. This just happens to be another one.

And pirates are fun! 

This is also an amazing opportunity for me to work with a new (to me!) editor, one who works in the historical department of TWRP. I hear those ladies are very serious about historical accuracy! I'm eagerly looking forward to learning more!

But, that doesn't mean that my paranormal romance editor won't be busy anymore. I have two more romances in the works with supernatural elements that I hope to send her soon. Despite branching into a new genre, that doesn't mean I'll abandon my first love!
