1500 Words a Day

I'm always on the look-out for writing methods. It fascinates me to learn about the way others write. No two are the same. What works for one writer, doesn't always work for another. But, that doesn't mean a writer shouldn't try new methods, just to see if maybe it might work for them.

I read recently that Stephen King writes between 5-10 pages a day, everyday. If I calculate 250 words per page, that’s between 1250-2500 words a day. Doesn't seem like a lot. (HA!) Many days I average about 2000 words. Then on some days whatever talent I possess has been drained from me and I'm lucky to have 400 shoddy words to prove it. I don't write every single day either. I tend to work on my project and obsessively finish it, or sometimes get stumped and set it aside for a bit (I hate doing that) and find something else to work on. But I take breaks in between. I work on editing. I read a lot. Many articles about the writing craft and the business side of writing. I also do research for my stories. So, even when I'm not producing word counts, I'm still working on my writing, just from a different angle.

At times it seems a bit difficult to get back into the writing part of it if I linger away for too long. I often hear writers preach that you must write every day to keep the writing muscle strong. For writing is like working a muscle, isn't it? If you don't exercise, it gets a little sloppy until you get back into the swing of things again.

Since I do a lot of research into the way other writers work, I thought I'd try an experiment. My method of writing seems a little laid back. I have three young children between the ages of 22 months and 6 years. They take up a lot of my day. I have a flexible writing schedule, doing most of my writing in the early morning hours and at naptime. I don't like to stress myself, but I do like to push myself to try harder, so that's what I'm going to do now. I'm challenging myself.

I going to write 1500 words. Every. Day.

Starting today, I'm going to strive to reach a word count of 1500 (or more!) every day until school starts at the end of August. Then I'll re-evaluate my writing schedule and see how well I've done.

Am I insane? I'm not sure yet. I've never given myself such a challenge before, but I do enjoy challenges. However, because I hate to stress myself, I have given myself an easy way to out. No, I'm not going to quit.

I'm going to write 1500 words every day, but they don't necessarily need to be part of a manuscript. Aha! No one said my writing muscle needed to be a fiction writing muscle. So, if I feel stumped with my characters for the day, I might give them some breathing room. Sometimes I need a day or two to figure out a solution to whatever has stumped me. So on those days (hopefully there will be very few!) I'll write a blog post or two. I'll look up writing prompts and try those for some exercise. I'll write about my day in a diary-like fashion. Or I'll write about my kids. I do have their journals I need to catch up on. I'll write about any little thing, as long as I get 1500 words (or more!) a day.

Look here! I'm counting this blog post as part of my word count for today! See, it's working!

When I look at it this way, it seems completely do-able. After all, there are 24 hours in a day. I can certainly sneak an hour or two away for solely myself and my writing. I've done more in the past, I can do this, too.

I'll check back in near September with my results. Hopefully, I'll have some positive things to say about my experience. Wish me luck!

Who Are The Dark Sentinels?

They lived millions of years ago, fatalities of fear and prejudice. Now, answers to a prayer for survival, they are among us again. Other shifters were nearly extinct, murdered by the thousands at mostly human hands. Capable of shifting at will, without the aid of the moon’s phases, they were born to protect them. Bigger, stronger, faster, and longer living, with highly developed preternatural abilities, they are prized outsiders among their packs. Prized for their ability to protect, yet destined to live as outsiders because of the very differences necessary to prevent the pack’s extinction.
Born to stand at the crossroads between pack-members and their slaughterers, Sentinels quickly learn that they are on their own – a different species. Born human, only two are born to each pack, male and female alphas, brother and sister. Pack members deny them mating privileges within the pack based on fear. No female wants to bear a sentinel because their lives are constantly at risk. When danger comes to the pack, they are on the front line, considered expendable.
When they reach mating age, they leave the pack for a time to find a mate – another sentinel. What happens when a sentinel develops feelings for a human? What happens when malevolent scientists learn how to strengthen humans by using sentinel blood?  As you can imagine, with their feral nature barely beneath the surface, Dark Sentinel passions run high. Touch, affection, and loyalty are necessary for their survival, and they are willing to go to extraordinary measures, risk everything, and break every rule for love.

Dark Sentinels – Book One: Sable

Sable, a sentinel wolf shifter, is captured and locked in his wolf form until Akila, a veterinarian, tries to tame him and unleashes a 6'5" baby blue-eyed surprise.

Dr. Akila Marshall is a veterinarian with a calling – save as many stray animals as possible. The only child of wealthy, yet distant parents, she’s convinced that love is not for her. Until…

Sable’s search for his twin sister leads him to Akila. Born into a rare species of wolf shifters whose main purpose is protecting others, he has always been forced to fend for himself, but Akila’s loving, protective nature draws him – and not a moment too soon. Together, they must learn to trust each other enough to overcome a new, deadly enemy.

Malia Mallory Answers "Are My Characters Autobiographical?"

Today, Malia Mallory visits my little corner of the blogosphere to discuss her characters. Welcome, Malia!

Are My Characters Autobiographical?
Sometimes my fans ask me how much of myself I put into my characters. The answer is not a simple one. Do my heroines have some traits in common with me? Yes. It's almost impossible not to put something of yourself into your writing. However, there are many differences between myself and the heroines in my stories.
For example, Mia, in Mia's Cop Craving, has a cop fantasy and, though I have certainly seen many hot policemen in my time, I never had a special affinity for them. Mia decides to fulfill her fantasies and goes looking for special cop to help her. This would not be characteristic of my behavior and, in fact, isn't characteristic of Mia's behavior either. She is generally more reserved. However, her fantasy has become so all-encompassing that she is compelled to try to fulfill it. Mia's stories are really about her bringing the sensuality in her mind into reality.
Grace, in R is for Revenge, works in an office. In my day, I've had many different kinds of office jobs. I certainly drew on this experience to flesh Grace out. She also has a terrible boss, and I have certainly been there as well. However, she becomes romantically involved with her new boss and that is something I have never done.
Mistress Ven is character of mine who is featured in several stories, including C is for Cock Ring and D is for Domination. She is a female Dominant. She is one of my characters who is probably the least like me. She is strong and assertive and I do like to think I am both of those things, but her tastes are quite different from mine.
I think writers in general must draw upon their personal experiences to bring their writing alive. After all, we are always told, "Write what you know." This is good advice, but it could be limiting. A good writer should also have a healthy dose of imagination. You do have to be a little careful though. If you build your own world, you pretty much can do anything you want. However, it can be very jarring to the reader if you take significant liberties with the world as we know it. It's a balance, and sometimes it takes a healthy dose of research to bring your writing alive.

Excerpt from Mia's Cop Craving

He brushed her lips with his. "Mmmm, you'd better point me to a flat surface."
Her hand fluttered in the direction of the hallway and she gasped as he swept his arm under her knees and picked her up. His legs covered the distance quickly, and it barely seemed a blink before they were in her bedroom.
Lights from the street bathed the room in a slight glow and Rogan laid her on the coverlet. He smoothed her hair back from her face and climbed onto the mattress beside her.
"Mia," he whispered, “tell me what happens in your fantasy."

What Lies Beyond in the Demimonde…

I want to introduce a very special guest, author Ash Krafton. I've known Ash for a while now and I'm super-excited that her debut book, BLEEDING HEARTS, has finally been released. So, please, help me give her a warm welcome! And read on to learn how to win some cool prizes!

Today is the last stop on my first virtual book tour. Over the past four weeks, I've visited nearly two dozen authors and bloggers to share excerpts, guest posts, and giveaways. I've even received a few reviews for BLEEDING HEARTS…and I've decided that reviews are my newest obsession. It's not so much the "star power"—although I do love those stars—but every time I read a review it kind of blows my mind to think someone read my book and thought about it long enough to actually tell someone about it.

I know being read by others was the whole purpose of seeking publication in the first place…but wow. I even had a crazy intense discussion about the story with one of the guys I work with—it's totally a guy book, he said, and proceeded to tell me all these awesome things he wished could happen next. All the while I'm thinking, It's a guy book, too! Squee!

Now that the tour is just about over and the thrill of my first release is starting to fade, I guess it's time to think of what will lie ahead. Trouble is, I spent so many years writing and perfecting this book, then learning how to market it, that I really didn't give much thought to what happens once the book comes out.

Luckily, I have an editor to think for me. :)

At the end of May, I'll be heading down to the Baltimore area to attend Balticon, a science fiction and fantasy convention. My editors are attending and invited me along…so it's going to be a stiletto-fest with some books thrown in for good measure. I haven't heard if I get to sit in for any panels yet but it would be awesome to do it! Most of all, I'm looking forward to face time and hugs from the team of editors who made BLEEDING HEARTS come to life.

Pink Narcissus Press will be handling the next two books of the Demimonde…and my editor is eager to get to work! Getting book two into shape is my biggest priority now so I guess I'll have to cut down on refreshing my Goodreads page so often or fooling around on Twitter.

Book two, BLOOD RUSH,  expands on the role of the Weres and the mythology of the Sophias, the oracles of the demivampires. A Sophia is a spiritual healer who helps to undo the soul-damage that cause demivamps to evolve into vampire. Our heroine, Sophie Galen, is a loner with no one to teach her what to do with her power so you can imagine what a relief it is when a mentor shows up. (And by “relief” I sarcastically mean “disaster”.)

The sequel is anticipated next March. Keep your fingers crossed for me—I'm unaccustomed to serious deadlines. I've gotten pretty laid-back in my old age. (Just ask Tricia…I should have gotten this article to her ages ago. :) )

I also hope to settle back into my old routine—writing in the mornings, blogging for QueryTracker a few times a month, and dragging my sorry hind end to the day job because Surprise! Writers don't get rich and famous overnight! I'm actually grateful for my day job because it's my substitute for a social life. Otherwise, I'd lock myself in my writing cave and only come out for snacks and to watch Castle or Game of Thrones on the DVR. (Oh, and laundry. I'm the queen of laundry.)

With any luck, life will return to normal soon, and the only thing that will be different is the book on my desk—because once upon last year or so, it was still no more than a file in my computer and a dream in my heart.

You can have my book on your desk, too—or even your ereader, if that's how you like it! Simply leave a comment and share YOUR writing goals with us…and Tricia will pick someone to receive an ebook of BLEEDING HEARTS.

Also, you are all invited to enter to win the Bleeding Hearts Blog Tour grand prize…the gift basket gets heavier by the day! Details and entry form can be found in the Bleeding Hearts Blog Tour schedule on my page. I hope you'll check out some of the other stops along the tour—I've been blessed with a fantastic group of hosts and I really had the time of my life on this book tour.

But now…it's soon back to the red pen and highlighters and the draft of BLOOD RUSH!

18 & Over Book Blogger GiveawayHop

I'm an avid reader as well as an author. In fact, I read more than I write. Tragic, I know, especially in regards to my bank account! But, I just can't help myself, ya know? I love to read! Plain and simple. And one of my favorite things about reading are the heroes! Not just any hero, mind you. The Romance Heroes. Usually, these are very drool-worthy men. Passionate. Strong. Courageous. And sensational in bed! Not to mention gorgeously handsome. I'm not sure about everyone else, but when I read a book, I have a clear picture of the hero in my head. Sometimes, he might take the form of an actor from the movies or TV.

Here are some examples. Not all of these books are considered romance, but they do have strong romantic elements.

For example, when I read Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, I see Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson as Ranger. I think somewhere I read that she pictured him when she wrote that character. It's been so long since I read that, so I'm not sure if its true, but it doesn't matter. The Rock will always be Ranger in my head.

Another is the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton. Many fans have posted who their choices of actors would be for the parts of their favorite characters. I've discussed this a few times with other LKH fans. Those I've talked with seem to be in agreement that Richard Zeeman (one of Anita's love interests who happens to be a werewolf) should be played by Hugh Jackman. There's a raw, masculine ruggedness that I feel he would be perfect for that role.

And for Anita's other main love interest (there are many these days, but I've only narrowed my choices to 2), Jean-Claude the vampire, I feel Gerard Butler could fill that role nicely. (I admit, Gerry is usually the number one actor I visualize whether I'm reading or writing!) When I saw his role in Dracula 2000, the lethal sexiness, the carnal energy he expressed, I felt would be perfect for Jean-Claude.

For the hero, Sebastian Collins, in my novella, The Witch and the Vampire, I pictured Richard Armitage. I think I had just finished watching him in the BBC Robin Hood series and just fell in love with him. He stepped into Sebastian's boots quite easily in my mind.
So tell me, who do you picture in your mind's eye while you're reading?  Follow my blog and leave a comment for a chance to win a free .pdf copy of my novella, The Witch and the Vampire. You can also find me on Facebook, GoodReads and Twitter.

Witchy Book Recommendations

The last post I wrote was about the 2012 Witches and Witchcraft Reading Challenge I'm participating in for this year. Since reading and writing about witches is a favorite hobby of mine, I thought I'd list a few of my favorite titles that I've read in the past.

Eternity (Immortal Witches, #1)Eternity by Maggie Shayne

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Blurb:
Three hundred years ago, Raven St. James was accused of witchcraft. Only one man tried to free her from the hangman's noose, Duncan, the town minister, who died trying to save her. Three hundred years later, the accused witch still lives and longs for her love. At last, after centuries of loneliness, Raven has found her precious Duncan. But as he awakens to the passion of his past life, so too does the evil that tore them apart. Now Raven and Duncan must prove their love for all eternity.

This is the first of The Immortal Witches series. The book's following this are: Infinity, Destiny, and Immortality.

Dime Store Magic (Women of the Otherworld, #3)Dime Store Magic by Kelley Armstrong

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Blurb:
Paige Winterbourne was always either too young or too rebellious to succeed her mother as leader of one of the world's most powerful elite organizations- the American Coven of Witches. Now that she is twenty-three and her mother is dead, the Elders can no longer deny her. But even Paige's wildest antics can't hold a candle to those of her new charge- an orphan who is all too willing to use her budding powers for evil... and evil is all too willing to claim her. For this girl is being pursued by a dark faction of the supernatural underworld. They are a vicious group who will do anything to woo the young, malleable, and extremely powerful neophyte, including commit murder- and frame Paige for the crime. It's an initiation into adulthood, womanhood, and the brutal side of magic that Paige will have to do everything within her power to make sure they both survive.

This is #3 in Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series, though this is the first book told about Paige. This series is a fantastic blend of paranormal creatures such as werewolves, vampires, ghosts, demons, sorcerors and witches.

Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, #1)Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

All the creatures of the night gather in "the Hollows" of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party...and to feed.

Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining - and it's Rachel Morgan's job to keep that world civilized.

A bounty hunter and witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she'll bring 'em back alive, dead...or undead.

The first book in Kim Harrison's The Hollow's series, also known to some as the Rachel Morgan series. Another great series to lose yourself to, involving witches, vampires, demons, werewolves, and even pixies!

Those are a few to get started. I love them to pieces! Next week, I'll post some Witchy non-fiction book recommendations. I've got quite a few favorites there, too!

What are some of your favorite fiction books about witches and witchcraft? I'd love to hear your recommendations. I'm always looking for more books to add to my TBR!
______________________________________________________________________

To add a side note: Today I'm guest blogging at The Vampire Book Realm's V-Spot blog. Yes, I know, its a site about vampires, and here I'm talking today about witches. But, I'm chatting about my book The Witch and the Vampire (see that witch connection there??) and my love of the 1960's TV series Dark Shadows (again about vampires AND witches). Stop by to comment for a chance to win an exclusive VBR wallpaper for your computer.

2012 Witches and Witchcraft Reading Challenge

Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf

During my browsing of the groups I've joined on GoodReads, I found a challenge that I feel is just right for me; The Witches and Witchcraft Reading Challenge. Yes, I read a lot of books and I must admit that within the last two years I've become quite a reading challenge addict. But this is the first challenge that I've joined that is hosted by a book reviewer's blog, so I hope I get this right. For some reason, I seem to complicate matters when I read the instructions when I'm sure they're quite simple.

This challenge runs from January 1, 2012 (yes, I'm joining a little late, but I'm sure I'll catch up!) thru December 31, 2012. You must read books that include a witch as the main character or that contain any major witchcraft elements. They may be fiction or non-fiction. There are four levels to choose from:

Initiate:  Read 1 - 5 Witchy Books
Maiden:  Read 6 - 10 Witchy Books
Mother:  Read 11 - 15 Witchy Books
Crone:  Read 16 - 20 Witchy Books

I'm going to pick Maiden, but I might upgrade to another level later in the year. First, I'll see how far I get. I admit, I tend to overfill my plate of goals each year and come December I'm scrambling around for the books with the smallest page counts to complete the leftover challenges. Oh, but what fun reading is! I really can't say no! :)

Now, for the complete list of rules and how to join this challenge, please visit Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf. She even gives you a list a book titles to get you started.

Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf

Looking through my bookshelf, I find a few titles I've read that I'd like to recommend to readers, too. Reading some of these books have inspired my own witchy writings, so I'll compile a list of titles and share them sometime next week.

As for now, if you're a fan of witchy books (and I hope you like The Merriweather Witches!), then hop over to Melissa's blog and sign up! I look forward to seeing what other readers have chosen for the challenge!

Review: The Twisted Tale of Stormy Gale by Christine Bell

The Twisted Tale of Stormy GaleThe Twisted Tale of Stormy Gale by Christine  Bell (aka Chloe Cole)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Blurb:
I'm a time pirate—born in 1810, now a 21st-century woman. I travel through time trying to right wrongs without disrupting the fragile balance between what is and what can never be.

That's why it's vital that I go to 1836 and find the man who conned my brother out of his Time Travel Mechanism as quickly as possible. If the technology falls into the wrong hands, it could change the world as we know it. The notorious Duke of Leister definitely qualifies as the wrong hands. An amateur scientist of the slightly mad variety, he's bound to figure out how to use the TTM sooner rather than later.

I knew this wouldn't be easy. But I wasn't counting on him being as sexy as hell. Or winding up chained to his bed…
25,900 words

My Review:
This novella was a joy to read! I loved it! It was fast-paced, the characters were interesting and well developed, and the plot was fascinating. This was also my introduction to steampunk. I don't think I've ever read anything in this genre. And I'm hooked! I can't wait to read another one. I would have loved to see this story as a full-length novel! It was interesting and suspenseful and I really enjoyed the use of first-person POV (point-of-view). I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a quick, fun romance that keeps you turning the pages until the end. I can't wait to read more from this author!

Review: Bleeding Hearts by Ash Krafton

Bleeding Hearts: Book One of the DemimondeBleeding Hearts: Book One of the Demimonde by Ash Krafton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Blurb:
Sophie Galen is an advice columnist who is saving the world—one damned person at a time.

Shy and sensitive Sophie has all but given up on love until she meets Marek, a mysterious stranger who seduces her with his striking good looks and his take-charge attitude. Yet the darkness she senses within him may be more than she is prepared to handle when Marek draws her into a world of vampires, werewolves, and treachery. Forced to leave behind the comfortable routines and certainties of her past, Sophie makes unbearable sacrifices and uncovers hidden truths about herself and the world around her
.

My review:
I won this ARC after entering a contest. I don't often review books, but I really enjoyed this debut and wanted to let everyone know about it.

I’ve been looking forward to reading this story since I first heard about it. The waiting was well worth it! BLEEDING HEARTS hooked me from the very first page. I loved Sophie’s wit, sarcasm and bravery. She handled things a bit better than I would have in the same situation! Marek’s overwhelming darkness drew me to him. He was sexy, dark and oh, so dangerous! The mythology behind the vampires in this urban fantasy was something I haven’t read before and I loved the Egyptian angle. Sophie pulled me into her world and I was reluctant to part with it in the end (luckily there is a sequel!). The anguish these characters go through really pulled at my heart, making this a very emotional story, not only for Sophie and Marek but also the other characters I fell in love with, like Jared and Rodrian. This novel is filled with light and dark, good and evil, and a love that is tested beyond all limits. Ash Krafton’s writing is amazing and I simply cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

BLEEDING HEARTS will be released from Pink Narcissus Press on March 15, 2012! Mark your calendars!
