Vote for Your Favorite in #CoverWars

My historical romance, The Pirate's Lady, is up against some fierce competition this week in Author Shout's Cover Wars. If you have a moment to pop over, take a look at the covers competing and vote for your favorite. You can vote once a day, but you must wait a full 24 hours before voting again.

Of course, I'd be thrilled if you vote for The Pirate's Lady and I appreciate all of the support my readers have shown. The book cover was designed by RJ Morris and is newly published by The Wild Rose Press.

The cover portrays the characters of my book perfectly. RJ captured just what my imagination created!

Captain Marco Dante and his lady love, Arianne, are featured aboard his ship, The Black Rose, as they sail for adventure.

Here's a little more about the book if you're interested...

Captain Marco Dante was captured and sentenced to hang two years ago, but he escaped before his punishment was carried out. Now he's come back to the woman whose memory kept him alive those long months in prison. Arianne had been his grand passion, but he failed to see how much she meant to him until it was too late. Can he recapture her heart? Or has he lost her forever?

Arianne never imagined she’d see her notorious pirate lover again. Though her heart sings with joy at his return, she knows he hasn't come back for her but for the treasure he left behind. She agrees to help him find it, but can her heart withstand one more adventure with him?

Holiday Romance Reading List - Winter Blog Hop

Author Marin McGinnis has invited several authors and bloggers to participate in her
Winter Blog Hop. Check out her blog to read more!

Starting at the end of November, I set aside most of the books on my TBR pile and pull out the holiday-themed titles. It just doesn't feel right reading a Christmas romance at any other time of year, so I read as much as I can since each year my TBR pile grows and grows!

The unfortunate truth, however, is that as fast as I can read, I'll probably not get all of these books read this year. The ones that I don't read this December, I'll save until next year. Some of these are brand new books just released this year, some of these are books I've had on my list from previous years.

Today, I'd like to share my list with you. This is by no means a complete list. I have many, many books on my shelf just waiting for me to pick them up to read, but these are the titles in particular that I'd like to read this year. If you'd like to add a title to my list, go right ahead in the comments. I'm an avid reader who loves recommendations from readers!

My holiday reading list this month contains:

Holly and Hopeful Hearts: A Bluestocking Belles Collection (currently reading)

When the Duchess of Haverford sends out invitations to a Yuletide house party and a New Year’s Eve ball at her country estate, Hollystone Hall, those who respond know that Her Grace intends to raise money for her favorite cause and promote whatever marriages she can. Eight assorted heroes and heroines set out with their pocketbooks firmly clutched and hearts in protective custody. Or are they?

All they’re asking for…

Can these two lonely souls find magic together or will their secrets steal their chance of a happy Christmas?

A Grosvenor Square Christmas by Anna Campbell, Shana Galen, Vanessa Kelly, and Kate Noble

What’s a hunter to do when she’s fallen for the vampire she’s been sent to stake? Cassandra Hayes has been dating Tremayne Graystone, the vampire she’s been sent to eliminate.

To stake or not to stake is the least of their problems when masked men kidnap them and hold them hostage. They realize all they want for Christmas is a chance to make their relationship work. Kisses under the mistletoe may not make this holiday merry, but they’re willing to give it a shot.

A Regency Christmas by Lyn Stone, Carla Kelly, and Gail Ranstrom

 “Scarlet Ribbons” by Lyn Stone

Captain Alexander Napier is battle scarred—from war and from life. For him, Yuletide is just a reminder of all that he’s lost. Can enchanting Amalie Harlowe restore light into the festive season…and reignite the passion in his heart?

“Christmas Promise” by Carla Kelly

Now that peace has broken out, Captain Jeremiah Faulk is at odds over what to do this Christmas, let alone with his life. Until a simple act of charity reunites him with his lost love—Ianthe Mears.

“A Little Christmas” by Gail Ranstrom

Tending to a houseful of grieving relatives isn’t Viscount Selwick’s idea of a merry Christmas. But one stolen kiss under the mistletoe with spirited Sophia Pettibone is about to change everything!

Christmas in Transylvania by Sandra Hill

For the first time ever, the leader of the Viking Vampire Angels, Vikar Sigurdsson, has been talked into celebrating a traditional Christmas! The tree has been decorated, the gifts have been wrapped, and the stockings have been hung. And that's mistletoe, not cobwebs, hanging from the ceiling of the creepy castle full of vangels … really!

The icing on the vampire cookie comes when vangel Karl Mortensen rescues Faith Larson, a battered young waitress, from her abusive boyfriend and hides her in the castle amidst the Christmas chaos. But what Karl thought was a frail young teenager is actually a very tempting woman. And she thinks his fangs are sexy!

But a strange "Christmas visitor" at the castle and demon vampires up to their old tricks could threaten the budding romance between Karl and Faith. It's an impossible match—a human and a vangel—but Christmas is a time for magic.

Karl and Faith don't stand a chance …

Christmas Spirits by Jane Charles

Mary Soares was supposed to spend Christmas, nice and warm on her family’s estate in Falkirk, Scotland, tending to their whisky business. However, the English have made smuggling almost impossible, and so order after order is waiting at the distillery until it’s safe enough to continue shipments. Most customers understand this. Most customers are reasonable. The Duke of Danby is not most customers. So after a number of demands from His Grace, insisting upon his order, Mary decides to deliver the whisky herself since no one else is available.

Benjamin Storm, Earl of Kenley, breathes a sigh of relief when his summons from the Duke of Danby has nothing to do with matrimony or a stack of special licenses. Instead, his uncle just needs Benjamin to travel to Scotland and procure his missing whisky shipment in time for his holiday festivities. The chore sounds easy enough, at least until he encounters a most unusual smuggler on her way to Danby Castle. Benjamin’s life may never be the same.

My Review:

A short and sexy romance featuring an alien who is stuck on Earth.

Claire doesn't want to spend the holidays alone, so her best friend pushes her to ask the sexy mall Santa out for dinner. Andreas is doing the best to get by on this planet without being discovered as an alien, made difficult by his natural green skin, but he can't deny his attraction to the woman who asks him out for dinner. Their need for companionship pulls them together as neither wants to be alone anymore. Andy entrusts his secret to Claire and hopes he hasn't made a mistake.

Although this was an extremely quick read, the characters were well-written, rounded and likeable. Claire's swift acceptance of Andy's origins might've seemed contrived in any other story, but Ms. Subject made the event believable and convincing. Both characters were uncertain and afraid, but willing to risk it all for a chance to be together. This was a delightful story to read and perfect for a single sitting.

I also enjoyed the bonus story at the end, Alien Kisses at Midnight. It is a quick glimpse into the beginning of a beautiful relationship between a woman and an alien banished to Earth for doing the right thing. Dena and Haul captured my attention from the very moment she ran into him with her car. A very entertaining story!

#BookSpotlight: A Magical Highland Solstice by @m_morganauthor #holidayromance

Blurb:
Laird Cormac Murray has witnessed how love destroyed his own father after the death of his mother, and he vows to never take a wife. Yet, when he comes upon a bewildered lass traveling alone, he finds his heart will no longer listen to his mind. In the end, Cormac risks everything to claim the love of a woman not of his time.

Eve Brannigan loves helping others and baking. After winning a contest, she is stunned to learn that the Clan Murray has requested her assistance to cater to their guests during the holiday season. When a lost path in Scotland leads her to a handsome but gruff Highlander, Eve fights the temptation to allow love to enter her heart for the first time.

Can the Fae and the magic of the Yule season bring together two souls who have forsaken love? Or will tragedies from the past separate the lovers forever?

Excerpt:
Giving her no time to protest, he grabbed her around the waist and hauled her up onto Fingal. When he mounted his horse and settled behind her, Cormac felt her body stiffen as he placed an arm around her waist. He leaned next to her ear. Her mass of curls brushed his face, and he inhaled her scent—one of different spices. Lust instantly surged forth, powerful and intense. “Relax,” he urged in a hoarse voice. Though he found it difficult to do so himself.

He felt her tremble, but she nodded. Giving a tug on the reins, they moved up the path.

With each steady trot, her body swayed and Cormac tried to focus on the road. The castle.
Fighting in the lists. Bathing in the icy waters of the loch. Anything, but the soft curves of the lass’s body pressing against his own. What was wrong with him? He prided himself on being a man always in control of his emotions—especially his lustful ones. Yet, now he found himself confused, tongue-tied, and his gut twisted into knots.

So deep in his thoughts, he did not notice Fingal veering off the main road until the lass let out a giggle. She had the most musical sound, and he found himself smiling. Guiding his horse back to the path, he could hear his men doing their best to contain themselves. A glance back confirmed William was coughing loudly and Gordon trying his best not to fall off his horse.

“I swear Fingal, I am tempted to trade ye in for another horse. Ye must be going blind, or worse, old.”

His horse let out a large snort.

Eve clicked her tongue in disapproval. “For shame, Mr. Murray. How cruel. I think he’s a kind animal. Perhaps it’s the man holding the reins who can’t see clearly the path in front of him?”

The lass was quick with the wit, he mused. “I dinnae ken your word, but ye may call me Cormac.” He leaned near her again. “And I can assure ye, I am nae blind, nor old.”

Favorite Christmas Movies #JoysHop2016 #giveaway

One of the best ways for me to get into that Christmassy feeling is to watch Holiday movies. I have a collection that I keep stocked on my DVD shelf that I begin watching from December 1 to 25. We usually have a movie playing in the background while we're decorating the Christmas tree, too. My kids need some kind of distraction. They love to help with the decorations, but with 4 eager helpers, things get a little carried away at times!

Anytime I need a laugh or maybe a good-feeling kind of cry, I watch these movies to get into the spirit of the Season. From Clark Griswald's attempt to have the hap-hap-happiest family Christmas to Ebenezer Scrooge learning about the true meaning of Christmas, there's practically a holiday movie for everyone!

Also, there are the classics that are a must-see every year and my kids like to keep the tradition of watching Holiday movies going. We've already watched a few last weekend! Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye crooning Christmas carols to little Suzy believing in Santa Claus, these are wonderful feel-good movies that I recommend everyone watch at least once a year!

Here's a list of my favorite Holiday movies in no particular order:

  • White Christmas (1954)
  • It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
  • A Christmas Carol (1999)
  • National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)
  • Elf (2003)
  • Scrooged (1988)
  • Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
  • Santa Clause: The Movie (1985)
  • Die Hard (1988)
  • The Polar Express (2004)
  • Ernest Saves Christmas (1988)
  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the animated version) (1966)
  • A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)
  • Frosty the Snowman (1969)
  • Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)
  • Mickey's Christmas Carol (1983)

"Merry Christmas, movie house! Merry Christmas, Emporium! Merry Christmas, you wonderful old Building and Loan!" — George Bailey

"Teacher says, every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings." — Zuzu Bailey

Ralphie: "No! No! I want an official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle!"
Santa Claus: "You'll shoot your eye out, kid."

"It's Christmas Eve! It's... it's the one night of the year when we all act a little nicer, we... we... we smile a little easier, we... w-w-we... we... we cheer a little more. For a couple of hours out of the whole year, we are the people that we always hoped we would be!" — Frank Cross

"Buddy the Elf, what's your favorite color?"— Buddy

And for those special people who include it in their holiday movie watching experience as I do, yes, I did include Die Hard on this list, too!

#BookSpotlight: The Lady of the Forest by @BarbaraBettis #HistoricalRomance

He must pursue his enemy; she must protect her people. Can their love survive the duties that drive them apart?

When her elderly husband dies, Lady Katherine fakes her own death and disappears into the forest with others escaping the brutish new lord. Determined to protect her people, she knocks the wrong man senseless. But Lord Henry isn't an enemy, he's the brother of her childhood friend. Although his tender confidence tempts her, she's bound by duty.

Henry of Chauvere has found the one lady he wants for his own, never mind she's tied him hand and foot. When he learns the king has ordered her to wed Stonehill's ruthless new master, he insists Kate seek haven with his sister. But she won't desert her friends. Henry vows to solve her problem, provided he catches a traitor before the threat from Kate's past catches her.

When a daring rescue compels Henry and Kate to join forces, their attraction grows into love. If only duty didn't drive them apart.

EXCERPT:
Kate drew the dagger sheathed at her waist and set to the knots at his wrist. “Two days ago, soldiers began searching for strangers. Friends at the castle told us a traitor roamed the forest, and Sir Mortimer gave orders to apprehend or kill him.”
“Then it appears Sir Paxton has reached your lord and recruited help. He has a talent for
spinning tales.”
The ropes gave way and Kate stepped back.
Henry massaged his wrists. “Your men tie a good knot. Have a lot of practice, do they?”
Kate jerked her gaze to his face. He jested at a time like this? Yes, blast the man, a smile lurked at the corners of his lips.
Her glance slid from his mouth to his eyes, and she gasped. “Your poor face. Here,” she handed him the dagger and waved at the binding around his ankles, “you cut while I pour more water. If that wound isn’t cleaned, it may turn bad.”
She’d retrieved the bowl from the floor where she’d dropped it earlier, and turned to fill it with cool water when a pair of strong hands gripped her shoulders. A deep, rough whisper brushed her ears.
“Never give a weapon to the enemy.”

Bio:
Award winning author Barbara Bettis has always loved history and English. As a college freshman, she briefly considered becoming an archeologist until she realized there likely would be bugs and snakes involved. And math.

She now lives in Missouri, where by day she’s a mild-mannered English teacher, and by night she’s an intrepid plotter of tales featuring heroines to die for—and heroes to live for.
