#BookReview ~ Mischief and Mistletoe #HolidayRomance

Mischief and Mistletoe by Mary Jo Putney, Jo Beverley, Joanna Bourne, Patricia Rice, Nicola Cornick, Cara Elliot, Anne Gracie, Susan King

Unwrap the most romantic of Regency delights in this sparkling holiday collection...

Christmastime in England--a time for passionate secrets, delicious whispers, and wicked-sweet gifts by the fire. From a spirited lady who sets out to save her rakish best friend from an unsuitable engagement, to a bold spy who gets the unexpected chance to win the woman he's always loved, to a vicar's daughter who pretends to be a saucy went, these holiday tales will make you curl up in front of the fire for a memorable season of mischief and mistletoe...

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Review

There are eight holiday romances included in this anthology and I enjoyed all of them. I admit, I even got a little teary-eyed over a few of them. Because these are all short stories and there are so many, I'm only going to try to write my thoughts in a sentence or two for each.

She Stoops to Wenchdom by Mary Jo Putney ~ Oh, this was an exciting one to start off the book. The heroine disguises herself as a barmaid for a chance to kiss the handsome hero so she can stop pining after him. I loved the interaction between these two. This is one of those stories that are so good, I'd like to read a longer version.

Miss Brockhurst's Christmas Campaign by Jo Beverley ~ This was probably my favorite in this collection. Penelope Brockhurst has been in love with Ross Skerries since childhood, but she never thought he'd feel the same about her. Now she's to spend Christmas with him and his family as well as a woman who is interested in marriage with him. Watching Penelope's interactions with Ross and her rival were entertaining to say the least. Loved it!

Intrigue and Mistletoe by Joanna Bourne ~ This had so much story in it that I would have preferred to read a full-length novel. There was a lot of backstory to this couple.

Wench in Wonderland by Patricia Rice ~ This was another favorite! I cried with this one. The poor hero is overwhelmed with his responsibilities and his household is a mess. In sweeps the heroine, with a mistaken identity issue, who manages to fit perfectly into his life. But when her true identity is revealed, is it possible for them to have a happily-ever-after?

On a Wicked Winter's Night by Nicola Cornick ~ A sweet story of a second chance romance and the fear of discovery.

Weathering the Storm by Cara Elliot ~ This was different from the typical Regency romances that I've read, but enjoyable.

The Mistletoe Bride by Anne Gracie ~ To date, I've loved every Anne Gracie novel I've ever read and this short story is no different. It's another case of mistaken identity as a woman traveling to live with her miserly uncle is mistaken for the "mail-order-like" bride that the hero needs to secure his inheritance. I loved this one!

A Wilder Wench by Susan King ~ In one short story, this author includes the tale of several generations of family as the heroine is forced to take drastic measures to save her brother.

#BookReview ~ On the Night of the Seventh Moon by Victoria Holt #gothic #suspense #romance

On the Night of the Seventh Moon by Victoria Holt
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

For generations, Victoria Holt has dazzled and entertained millions of readers with her spine-tingling novels of romantic suspense. On the Night of the Seventh Moon is one of her most evocative, magical, and chilling. Come take a journey into a dark and shadowy forest where nothing is as it seems…

On the night of the seventh moon, according to ancient Black Forest legend, Loke, the god of mischief, is abroad in the world. It is a night for singing and dancing. And it is a night for love.

Helena Trant was enchanted by everything she found in the Black Forest—its people, its mysterious castles, its legends and lore. Especially its legends of love. Until the day she started to live one of them and the enchantment turned suddenly into a terrifying nightmare….

My Review

This was an unusual story that surprised me. The story about Helena Trant and written in her point of view. One day after getting separated from her classmates, she finds a man walking in the misty forest of Germany. The meeting is memorable and she doesn't forget him even after she travels back to England to live with her two aunts. When she's visited by some relatives on her mother's side, they invite her back to Germany to stay with them. During a festival on the night of the seventh moon, she meets the man again. His name is Maximilian. They discover since the first night they met, they've fallen in love with each other. This is insta-love at its finest. They marry and spend a few glorious days together. Eventually, Maximilian has to go back to his father to explain their situation. Helena's relatives come to get her and the next morning she awakes to fina a doctor explaining that she's been viciously attacked and has been given treatment that's basically caused her to live in a dreamworld for a few days. Her relatives and the doctor try to convince her that she was never married, there is no Maximilian and everything that she has experienced recently has all been a dream to protect her sanity from the horrible truth.

It was an unusual story. But told very well. As the reader, even I was confused as to what was real and what wasn't. Was Maximilian real or merely a figment of Helena's imagination? The story progresses, but I don't want to give away any spoilers. She goes back to live with her aunts, trying to go on with her life. There are many twists and turns that eventually lead her back to Germany to discover the truth.

It was a gripping and suspenseful tale that left me turning the pages to discover the truth of Helena's story. The mystery of those few days haunted her for several years. I was so happy when she finally discovered the truth and everything was revealed! The story was well-written and satisfying. Although it was more mystery than romance, I enjoyed every moment of it. I recommend it to anyone who likes to read gothic romantic mysteries.

Die For You by Michele Mills #BookReview

34460225. sy475
Die For You by Michele  Mills
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Love, in a hopeless place.

Two months after a virus took out civilization, Rachel Donnelly is the last living soul in California, as far as she can tell. Until she runs into a Marine sniper, battle-hardened but alive and healthy.

Adam Sanchez would love nothing more than a slamming session of I-can't-believe-we're-alive post-apocolyptic sex in the back of his Hummer. But Rachel's fragility, inexperience-and much younger age-hold him back from exposing her to his raw, aggressive sexuality. If anything, Rachel needs protection. Especially from himself.

As they band together with other survivors to battle feral animals, violent ex-cons, and motorcycle clubs jockeying for power, Rachel grows stronger in mind, body, and spirit-strong enough to give the dangerously sexy Marine what they both crave.

The power of their passion rocks Adam's world, bringing him to his knees-which, he discovers too late, is the worst possible place to be when danger springs from the shadows.

WARNING: Contains a sexy Marine, a tattooed ex-con, a girl who blossoms into a sexually assured young woman, laughter despite the pain, m/f/m menage, hope, love, and more bad language and violence than are strictly necessary.

My Review
The blurb to this novel is astounding! It totally grabbed me and I had to immediately read the first three sample chapters, which also hooked me. I bought the book with high expectations. It fell a little flat after that. I guess I was expecting the story to go in one direction and the author chose another. No big deal. It was still a really good story, just not what I was expecting.

Weirdly, I enjoyed the overuse of the bad language. It made the story more realistic with the f-bombs constantly thrown around. If a virus wiped out 75% of the population, I'm pretty sure those who were left would be cussing up a storm.

I think I would have liked this story to be more of a slow burn romance. It was basically insta-love, which works great for a lot of readers. I really enjoyed Adam and Rachel's emotional attachment to each other, but to me it felt rushed. The connection that the two characters felt for each other was passionate and well written.

The characters were believable. Adam is a Marine, an Alpha male with a past relationship that has left him wounded. He's passionate and protective of what's his. Rachel is a young girl, fresh out of high school, currently attending college until the outbreak, clearly inexperienced in the reality of life and love. Both of these characters grow throughout the book as the new world they are forced to survive in changes them forever.

The steamy sex scenes were definitely worth the price of the book. There were plenty of them and quite enjoyable.

Now that I know what I'm getting into with this author's writing style, I'm interested to read the rest of the series. There are two more books in the series, one of which is Trevor's story which I'm eager to read.

Bride of Pendorric by Victoria Holt #BookReview

6288045

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Favel Farrington meets Roc Pendorric on the idyllic Mediterranean island of Capri, where she was raised and lives with her father. Roc sweeps her off her feet, taking her from her home by an emerald sea to the ancient family home of the Pendorrics, in Cornwall. His sister and her family await them with open arms, welcoming young Favel. She is the much anticipated Bride of Pendorric, a name that amuses and flatters her.

The castle is beautiful in its way, but the atmosphere is foreboding. Roc's twin nieces begin watching her carefully; even the stones in the courtyard seem to have eyes. On the walls hang portraits of two other Brides of Pendorric--one of them Roc's mother--who died both young and tragically. Favel's fear increases as Roc seems to be growing more and more distant. Has her courtship and marriage been just a deception?

Soon Favel can no longer dismiss as accidents the strange things happening to her. Someone is trying to kill her and she must confront the very real dangers that surround her.

My Review
I think this might be one of my favorite Victoria Holt novels. Bride of Pendorric is a gripping romantic suspense. Favel Farrington falls hopelessly in love with Roc Pendorric when he arrives for a visit on her Mediterranean island home. It is a compulsive and quick courtship, but Favel knows he is the one for her and they marry. Shortly after, tragedy strikes, but Roc whisks Favel away to his home in Cornwall where he introduces his new Bride of Pendorric to his family.

Meeting the family, the neighbors and the villagers would be overwhelming enough, but Favel is still coming to understand her new life as a married woman to a man who is still mostly a stranger to her. As she learns about her husband and the legends surrounding her new home, she begins to wonder if she made a mistake. Is Roc the man she fell in love with or did he have ulterior motives to marrying her?

With each page, the danger escalates as it becomes increasingly evident that Favel's life is in danger. Is it the ghost that is said to haunt the house or is it someone much more closer to her?

There is so much in this story that I don't want to give away any spoilers. The author wove the elements of this gothic mystery superbly. It had everything necessary to instill a sense of foreboding and fear within the reader. I had to turn the pages faster to find out what happened next. And by the climax, I had a list of suspects, each with a clear motive, but I was completely surprised by the ending. The book was a pleasure to read! I can see why other readers have referred to this as a timeless classic.

If you like books like Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, then you'll be sure to enjoy Bride of Pendorric.

#BookReview: Top Secret Twenty-One by Janet Evanovich #mystery

Top Secret Twenty-One by Janet Evanovich

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Catch a professional assassin: top priority. Find a failure-to-appear and collect big bucks: top score. How she'll pull it all off: top secret.
Trenton, New Jersey's favorite used-car dealer, Jimmy Poletti, was caught selling a lot more than used cars out of his dealerships. Now he's out on bail and has missed his date in court, and bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is looking to bring him in. Leads are quickly turning into dead ends, and all too frequently into dead bodies. Even Joe Morelli, the city's hottest cop, is struggling to find a clue to the suspected killer's whereabouts. These are desperate times, and they call for desperate measures. So Stephanie is going to have to do something she really doesn't want to do: protect former hospital security guard and general pain in her behind Randy Briggs. Briggs was picking up quick cash as Poletti's bookkeeper and knows all his boss's dirty secrets. Now Briggs is next on Poletti's list of people to put six feet under.
To top things off, Ranger--resident security expert and Stephanie's greatest temptation--has been the target of an assassination plot. He's dodged the bullet this time, but if Ranger wants to survive the next attempt on his life, he'll have to enlist Stephanie's help and reveal a bit more of his mysterious past.
Death threats, highly trained assassins, highly untrained assassins, and Stark Street being overrun by a pack of feral Chihuahuas are all in a day's work for Stephanie Plum. The real challenge is dealing with her Grandma Mazur's wild bucket list. A boob job and getting revenge on Joe Morelli's Grandma Bella can barely hold a candle to what's number one on the list--but that's top secret.

My Review:
I can always rely on Janet Evanovich to brighten my day and provide a book with laugh-out-loud antics. The combination of bounty hunter, Stephanie Plum, her side-kick, Lula, and the annoying Randy Briggs is guaranteed to wreak havoc and chaos in Trenton, New Jersey.

Stephanie's on the hunt for another skip, Jimmy Poletti, who proves elusive, but extremely active since Randy Briggs is convinced Poletti's out to kill him. And because Briggs being, well, Briggs, no one will help him but Stephanie. She figures if Poletti's out to get Briggs, she'll have a better chance at capturing him by keeping Briggs close.

This story is filled with mystery, mayhem, Chihuahua minions, dead bodies, a scary Russian assassin with one eye, rocket launchers and car bombs. It also has Bob, the dog. And smokin' hot Ranger and sexy Morelli, so I'd say this book is definitely worth the read.

#BookReview ~ A Clockwork Christmas #steampunk #holidayromance

A Clockwork Christmas: Wanted: One Scoundrel / This Winter Heart / Far From Broken / Crime Wave in a Corset Edited by Angela James Written by JK Coi, PG Forte, Stacy Gail, Jenny Schwartz

And an American inventor finds love Down Under. Enjoy Victorian Christmas with a clockwork twist in these four steampunk novellas.

Anthology includes:

Crime Wave in a Corset by Stacy Gail
This Winter Heart by PG Forte
Wanted: One Scoundrel by Jenny Schwartz
Far From Broken by JK Coi

Stories also available for purchase separately.

117,000 words

My Review: 4 of 5 stars

These were all very entertaining holiday stories filled with steampunk inventions and creations, but I will admit that I enjoyed the first and last stories the very best.

Crime Wave in a Corset by Stacy Gail was fast-paced and suspenseful with interesting and mysterious characters. The characters clashed at the beginning and then were forced to work together which only brought them closer. It was a well-written story.

Far From Broken by JK Coi left me breathless. Although this story started out more slowly than the first, that by no means detracted from the story unfolding to introduce two tortured characters in need of love and healing. Callie and Jasper's ordeal touched my heartstrings as they both struggled to overcome the ugly hand that was dealt to them. This was an emotionally touching story that I enjoyed so much that I instantly bought the sequel, Broken Promises, which continues their story.

#BookReview: How to Train Your Zombie by Catherine Winchester

How to Train Your Zombie by Catherine Winchester

My Rating: 4 of 5 Stars

The zombie apocalypse, which has devastated the world, is in its final throes when Meg's husband is bitten. She has lost so much already that she simply can't face losing him too, so when it becomes apparent that he is about to join the ranks of the walking dead, she decides to employ her skills as a dog trainer and takes it upon herself to train him.

Not only must she face the dangers inherent in close contact with a zombie, she must also protect him from outside forces that mean him harm. Can she convince the handsome yet stern Colonel MacDonald that he deserves a chance? Can she stop him being used for vivisection? What about those who want to use him as bait for other zombies?

Join Meg during the final few months of the Zombie War, as she shares her, at times, gruesome, sad and darkly humorous story.

My Review

As the blurb suggests, this is a darkly humorous story. Told through Meg's eyes, she fills the reader in fairly quickly so you understand what kind of world Meg and her husband, Jim, are living in which helps explain the desperate lengths Meg goes through to keep Jim with her after he turns. It's a disturbing twist of events, but the catalyst propels the story onward which leads Meg to Don, or rather Don to Meg, and soon she and Jim find themselves on a military base where a group of scientists want to experiment with Meg's amazing zombie break through.

Although it could use a bit of editing, I still found it to be entertaining, fast-paced and emotionally satisfying. I was quickly pulled into Meg's story and felt compelled to discover what happened next to her, Jim and Don. I also like the way the author described the zombies and Meg's ability to train them. It was a unique take on a favorite supernatural creature. Ms. Winchester spins an interesting tale of survivors of a zombie apocalypse.

#BookReview: Murder the Light by Ash Krafton #urbanfantasy

MURDER THE LIGHT by Ash Krafton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned—especially the woman scorned by the King of Hell himself.

Chiara has been abducted by her own mother: an Enochian defector who has taken up arms against the Light. Luminea will use Chiara to ensure the future of her empire—and to burn away her painful past with the man who had stolen everything from her, so long ago.

Unknowingly, that’s exactly the guy to whom Simon Alliant turns for help. The exorcist mage makes the ultimate deal with Chiara’s father to get her back...but he’ll have the Devil to pay.

My Review:
This is the second book in The Demon Whisperer series. Because it was a continuation of the first, I highly recommend you read the first book, Charm City, before you read this one. Charm City introduces the reader to the main characters and the plot that arises in Murder the Light.

So, we left Charm City with Chiara abducted. We discover in Murder the Light that she's been abducted by her mother, Luminea. It takes Simon a little longer than the reader to discover this, however. After searching for a while, he becomes desperate and summons her father. Simon thinks her father is a demon, but discovers his error when he meets Lucifer himself. After making a deal with the Devil, Simon goes to Chiara's rescue where he has to battle her fierce Enochian mother and the fallen Angel who has become Luminea's protector.

In this novel, we learn about Luminea and Chiara's childhood. It was interesting to see the development of Chiara's mother and their strained relationship with each other. This greatly explained the motivation behind Luminea's actions. By the end, we are given the whole story with a clear understanding of why these things have happened.

Simon's struggle in this story is, dare I say, even more intense than the last novel. The physical demands he endured because of his deal with Lucifer made me cringe. Seriously. Simon suffered severely in his quest to find and free Chiara. It was distressing to read what he had to go through. At times, I wasn't sure how much more he could take or if he would make it to the end.

This is a fantastic series! I'm in love with Simon. He's a well-rounded character with flaws that make him real and believable. He tries to do good things, but makes mistakes along the way. The action is fast paced making this another terrific page-turner, the dialogue is snappy and like the first filled with sarcasm and wit. Ash Krafton's writing style is a joy to read! Also, like the first, the ending is a cliffhanger that will undoubtedly lead us into the next book of this series. I'm excited and eager to read more!

#BookReview ~ Charm City by @AshKrafton #urbanfantasy

Charm City by Ash Krafton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The darkness is rising and one man stands against it: the exorcist mage Simon Alliant. But in Baltimore, he finally meets his match...a part-mortal divinity with the power to whisper away demons.

Simon Alliant is an exorcist who battles demons, whether he wants to or not. Sometimes it's not so bad...he gets to play with magic, after all. But for Simon, magic represents a demon of another kind. He's addicted to magic and it takes more than a handful of charms to keep that particular demon at bay.

Chiara is part Light, part Dark, and stubbornly mortal. The woman has a way with words: she literally talks demons into abandoning their human hosts. Simon thinks that's not the only trick she has up her sleeve-and that's pretty high praise coming from a mage like him.

As intriguing as that may be, Simon has too many reasons to distrust her...one of them being his more-or-less partner, an angelic Watcher. Amidst all the celestial warnings of the rising dark comes a new prophesy that makes him wonder: is Chiara a threat to him and all of mankind?

Or will she be his salvation?

My Review:
This was such an entertaining story! I loved it! It is dark, gritty and emotional with delightfully superb writing, just what I expect from a novel by Ash Krafton. Simon Alliant is a man tormented by his past. He struggles to right a wrong doing the only thing he knows how to do. He exorcises demons to save human lives. And in doing this, he meets Chiara, a woman unlike any he has ever known. When he first meets her, he thinks he's saving her from a demon, but she, in fact, is trying to exorcise the demon in her own unique way. She whispers to it until the demon listens to her, sending it back to Hell. She is a powerful ally and amazingly strong woman. But, she's more than that. She's a mystery to Simon, one that he needs to solve along with his pursuit of defeating the rising darkness.

Simon pulled at my heartstrings in a way few characters do. He is a complicated man who fights evil while guilt eats away at his soul. As Chiara (and I) learned about his past, it explained his current dark attitude toward life and his existence.

Oh, and I loved the dialogue! Sarcasm oozes from this guy and Chiara is sassy on her own terms. This was a fun book to read! It was full of action, magic and mayhem, mystery and suspense and since I'm really a romantic at heart, I wonder if perhaps there may be a little romance between Simon and Chiara in a future book. This tale is a page-turner! And the ending hits like a fist, leaving the reader gasping with surprise. I'm eager to keep reading this series to find out what happens next.

#BookReview: Passion Never Dies by Anna Durand #PNR

Passion Never Dies: The Complete Reborn Series by Anna Durand

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In March 2014, Anna Durand introduced a unique new series of paranormal romance novellas. For the first time ever, all four tales in the Reborn series are collected in one book.

Dawn woke up drowning, inside a tank in a laboratory straight out of a science fiction movie. Blinded by amnesia, she has no choice but to trust in the alluring stranger who pulls her out of the tank, but Jake Maxwell knows more than he cares to admit. Now Redeo Biotech, the company responsible for Dawn's resurrection, is hunting them both.

As their passion for each other blossoms, Jake and Dawn must outwit their enemies and rediscover their past lives. But when their greatest foe rises from the ashes of ancient Egypt bent on vengeance, only Jake and Dawn's eternal connection has the power to save them.

This collection includes the novellas Reborn to Die, Reborn to Burn, Reborn to Avenge, and Reborn to Conquer.

My Review:
Dawn wakes up in a tank filled with blue liquid, not remembering her name or her past or how she ended up in a laboratory with a handsome man who insists she needs to follow him quickly before the scientists return to find them. That scene begins an adventurous and romantic tale about a woman who has been resurrected from a 3000 year-old mummy.

When I read the description about this book, I knew instantly that I wanted to read it. A romance involving a mummy? That seemed right up my alley. I love a good paranormal romance with a unique twist and this book did not disappoint. The fast-paced action was intense as Dawn and Jake raced to escape the scientists and their military-like security. One turn after another, they were barely out of danger before another danger arose, leaving a breathless reader who couldn't stop turning the pages. I read this book in less than 3 days, which for my busy schedule is fairly quick these days. But, I really couldn't put this book down. The chapters are short and end with cliffhangers which kept convincing me that I could read just one more page, just one more chapter before I had to put it down.

Passion Never Dies is an exciting tale that won't disappoint readers looking for a unique and action-oriented romance. It was interesting to discover more about Dawn and how she came to be revived. I liked the explanations for her understanding of modern day devices, too. I enjoyed learning about her past and her experiences in ancient Egypt.

There are a few things that might stretch the limits of believability in this story, such as the number of times someone died and was brought back to life or the chance encounters with characters who recall their inter-connected past-life memories, but considering the plot is about a 3000 year-old mummy being brought back to life via a combination of science, technology and magic, I'm willing to overlook it. Besides, this story was just too much fun to read! In my opinion, this reminds me of a combination of a day-time soap opera and the sci-fi TV series, Stargate, SG1. And I mean that in the best possible comparisons.

I didn't realize, however, until I began reading that this book was originally a type of serial, which explains many of the repeated explanations to get readers caught up with the story in each section. I'm feel fortunate that I read this completed addition, so I did not have to wait for each installment. Not having the entire collection at once would've annoyed me. I'm the type of reader who will wait until an author completes a trilogy before reading all the books back to back. Of course, that's just me, but I know there are other readers out there who feel the same. If that's the case, then this book is for you!

Story Blurbs & My Review:

I truly enjoyed reading this collection of short stories. There were some amazing tales in here that I plan to read again and again. They're charming, sweet and romantic. A lovely book to read during the holidays! Because of the variety of these stories, I've reviewed each individually below.

Valuing Vanessa by Susana Ellis ★★★
Facing a dim future as a spinster under her mother’s thumb, Vanessa Sedgely makes a practical decision to attach an amiable gentleman who will not try to rule her life.
This was a sweet romance between Vanessa Sedgely and George Durand. Although, I loved the rich historical detail and dialogue of this story, I didn't feel there was much conflict between the main characters. Their love story was short and brief, their relationship easily resolved. I enjoyed reading about George's spunky daughter, Louise. She more than stole the story with her antics. But, even she accepted her future step-mother far too easily. I would've like to see her protest more.

A Kiss for Charity by Sherry Ewing ★★★★
Young widow Grace, Lady de Courtenay, has no idea how a close encounter with a rake at a masquerade ball would make her yearn for love again.
This story was deftly woven with the previous story where we get to see the viewpoint of Lord Nicholas Lacey and Grace, Lady de Courtenay. I fell in love with Lord Nicholas on the first page of this tale. Haunted by the death of his beloved wife, he's avoided society for two years until his brother-in-law, George Durand, drags him from seclusion. Eventually, he meets a mysterious woman at a masquerade with whom he shares an instant attraction.

With the encouragement of her friend, Moriah, Grace sneaks off to a masquerade where she enjoys an adventurous night flirting with a provocative gentleman. While they share a kiss, she fears letting him know her identity, afraid of his bad opinion of her wanton behavior. Grace runs away into the night before he can discover any more about her.

Months later, they meet again. Despite the fact they didn't view each other's faces because of the masks, they are both able to identify each other because of their intense attraction.

Despite the courtship being riddled with misunderstandings, I enjoyed reading this sweet romance. The characters were well-written and likeable. Even the secondary characters, such as Grace's brother and sister, were a joy to read. It was interesting to see how this story was blended seamlessly with the first. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Artemis by Jessica Cale ★★★★★
Actress Charlotte Halfpenny is in trouble. Pregnant, abandoned by her lover, and out of a job, Charlotte faces eviction two weeks before Christmas. When the reclusive Earl of Somerton makes her an outrageous offer, she has no choice but to accept. Could he be the man of her dreams, or is the nightmare just beginning?
Charlotte Halfpenny is an actress who has lost her job, lost her home and lost her lover. And she's pregnant. Charlotte is not in a good way at the beginning of this story. She knows finding work is hopeless with her tainted reputation and who would hire an actress who is far older than what society deems desirable? She's standing on the edge of a bridge looking into a deep, dark river when a gentleman arrives in a carriage to offer her another option. Curious, and not really wanting to die, she agrees to hear his proposal.

Apollo Rothschild, the Earl of Somerton, is in need of an heir. Seeing that he can't have children of his own, and learning that the beautiful Charlotte Halfpenny is pregnant and in need of assistance, he offers to wed her if she agrees to claim the child is his. Since her choices are extremely limited, she sees no other alternative but to agree to his proposal. However, the more she learns of the man, the more she feels for him and his situation. The mystery surrounding the Earl of Somerton isn't a simple one. The closer she gets to him, the closer she gets to his secret. A secret no one must discover.

This story was amazing! Typically, the stories I read are about the gentleman and ladies of the ton, but here's a heroine who is an actress with nothing left her to name. Despite everything she's gone through, all the choices both good and bad that she's had to make, she still holds her head high. It doesn't matter that she knows the ugly things people say about her, she does the best that she possibly can in the situation she's in to survive. I admired Charlotte and the strength of her character to continue to do good deeds when she could've easily become a bitter and jaded woman.

And the Earl of Somerton… What can I really say about him without giving too much away? He's a gentleman above reproach, able to give Charlotte anything she desires. He's kind, considerate, thoughtful and intelligent. I fell in love with him right along with Charlotte. He's a tortured soul with enemies who are eager to see him gone. Despite that, he does everything he can to protect Charlotte.

The ending was simply beautiful! I admit, I had my suspicions about the twist at the end. I don't want to give anything away, but I was so pleased that everything worked out just the way it did. This was a beautifully romantic tale that was both unusual and delightful! This is one story that I'll enjoy rereading again. I greatly admire Ms. Cale's storytelling abilities. She's definitely on my list of authors to read!

The Bluestocking and the Barbarian by Jude Knight ★★★★★
James must marry to please his grandfather, the duke, and to win social acceptance for himself and his father’s other foreign-born children. But only Lady Sophia Belvoir makes his heart sing, and to win her he must invite himself to spend Christmas at the home of his father’s greatest enemy.
James Winderfield, Lord Elfingham is probably one of the most romantic heroes that I've ever read. He's handsome, devoted and passionate. When he falls in love, that love is forever. James needs to marry. His grandfather has chosen potential wives for James to marry that would aid them with social acceptance for his foreign-born siblings, but James insists he will marry only for love when he stumbles upon Sophia Belvoir. He makes every effort to learn more about her. He places himself in the same events and social venues that she attends to get closer to her. Rumors abound in society and everyone, including Sophia, thinks he is courting her younger sister, Felicity. Being older and "on the shelf," she doesn’t see herself as a potential wife for a man who will one day become a duke. She has low self-esteem when she compares herself to her younger sister who is everything she is not. But, James isn't interested in Felicity other than being the sister of the woman he loves and intends to marry. Eventually, Felicity aids him in winning Sophia's love, but at a moment when Sophia believes it might be too late.

These characters were beautifully described, both the main characters and the secondary. They were well-rounded and each had a distinct personality and goal. The descriptions of the James's unique background was entertaining as he explained the differences in their holiday celebrations. The dialogue between James and Sophia was believable and engaging.

This story was s joy to read! In my opinion, the stories in this anthology just get better and better!

Christmas Kisses by Nicole Zoltack ★★★
Louisa Wycliff, Dowager Countess of Exeter wants only for her darling daughter, Anna, to find a man she can love and marry. Appallingly, Anna has her sights on a scoundrel of a duke who chases after every skirt he sees. Anna truly thinks the dashing duke cares for her, but her mother has her doubts.
I liked the beginning of this story. From the start we are introduced to the main characters and their problems. It was a great beginning and I was interested to learn more about these people. However, the flashbacks to her mother's past pulled me out of the story. This is just my opinion, but I think the story would have been fine without the flashbacks. I was eager to learn more about Anna and Jasper. I especially wondered why Jasper was going through a troubled time, as his mother put it. I knew there had to be a reason for his constant scowling and his rude behavior, the way Anna saw him. All in all, this was a sweet romance.

An Open Heart by Caroline Warfield ★★★
Esther Baumann longs for a loving husband who will help her create a home where they will teach their children to value the traditions of their people, but she wants a man who is also open to new ideas and happy to make friends outside their narrow circle. Is it so unreasonable to ask for toe curling passion as well?
This was a sweet story about Esther Bauman and Adam Halevy. While Adam is on a mission in France, his thoughts are constantly returning to Esther, the woman he left behind. Once he returns to England, he races to Hollingstone Hall where Esther is attending a social gathering for the holidays.

I enjoyed reading this story. It seemed a little short compared to some of the others, but that might be because the main characters were already attracted to each other at the beginning of the story. They knew each other, but never admitted their love for one another until the end.

Dashing Through the Snow by Amy Rose Bennett ★★★★★
Headstrong bluestocking, Miss Kate Woodville, never thought her Christmas would be spent racing across England with a viscount hell-bent on vengeance. She certainly never expected to find love...
Kate Woodville is a teacher and the sister of Freddie, a war hero who will one day inherit his uncle's title and estate. However, because of their gambling father, Kate and Freddie grew up poor. Freddie meets Violet Lockhart and the two fall madly in love with each other. Violet's family doesn't approve of poor Freddie thinking he is after the family's fortune. Anthony Lockhart, Lord Stanton, makes it clear to Kate that he wants Freddie to stay away from his sister, Violet, even going so far as to pay Freddie off. It doesn't work. Freddie and Violet secretly plan to elope to Gretna Green to marry. The plan is put into motion on the way to Hollystone Hall for the holidays. Freddie and Violet run off leaving both Kate and Lord Stanton behind. Furious, Lord Stanton demands that Kate accompanies him as they chase after the lovers intent on stopping them from marrying. The weather has other plans and hinders their pursuit. Along the way, Kate's harsh opinion of Lord Stanton softens until she begins to see him in a completely different light. Against her own wishes, she begins to fall in love with him. Lord Stanton also has a change of heart as he learns more about Kate Woodville and the woman she truly is instead of the person he assumed she was. Knowing they can't catch their siblings in time to stop the marriage, they concede defeat and arrive at Kate's uncle's home, Fenwick House. Here, Kate and Anthony share a kiss beneath the mistletoe that changes them both forever.

This was a thoroughly fun story to read! I loved the well-written characters, both the main and secondary, and the difficulties they faced. Both the hero and heroine had flaws that made them believable and all the more enjoyable to read. Anthony's anger and disdain along with Kate's low opinion of Lord Stanton kept me turning the pages to find out what happened next. I loved the interaction and the dialogue between these two. This story was far more sensual than the others in this anthology, of which I happily approve! I would've loved to see this as a longer story. I look forward to reading more from this author.

A Suitable Husband by Jude Knight ★★★
As the Duchess of Haverford’s companion, Cedrica Grenford is not treated as a poor relation and is encouraged to mingle with Her Grace’s guests. Perhaps among the gentlemen gathered for the duchess’s house party, she will find a suitable husband?
A sweetly romantic story about Cedrica Grenford and Marcel Fournier. It was a charming story and I liked the characters, but I had some trouble reading it. For me, this story was difficult to read since it was broken up in chapters between the other stories in this anthology. I understand this was a creative endeavor, but it made reading the story challenging. Every time I started a new chapter, I had to refer to the last one to remind myself where these characters were last. This might not have been an issue if I had read the entire book in a short sitting, but I don't read as fast as I used to and it took me a while to get through this book, especially since I was reading it during the busy holiday season. If I read this book again, I would just skip pages and read this particular story in its entirety to enjoy the characters, the setting and the romance.

My Review:

A short and sexy romance featuring an alien who is stuck on Earth.

Claire doesn't want to spend the holidays alone, so her best friend pushes her to ask the sexy mall Santa out for dinner. Andreas is doing the best to get by on this planet without being discovered as an alien, made difficult by his natural green skin, but he can't deny his attraction to the woman who asks him out for dinner. Their need for companionship pulls them together as neither wants to be alone anymore. Andy entrusts his secret to Claire and hopes he hasn't made a mistake.

Although this was an extremely quick read, the characters were well-written, rounded and likeable. Claire's swift acceptance of Andy's origins might've seemed contrived in any other story, but Ms. Subject made the event believable and convincing. Both characters were uncertain and afraid, but willing to risk it all for a chance to be together. This was a delightful story to read and perfect for a single sitting.

I also enjoyed the bonus story at the end, Alien Kisses at Midnight. It is a quick glimpse into the beginning of a beautiful relationship between a woman and an alien banished to Earth for doing the right thing. Dena and Haul captured my attention from the very moment she ran into him with her car. A very entertaining story!

#BookReview: The Bewitching Tale of Stormy Gale by Christine Bell #steampunk

The Bewitching Tale of Stormy Gale by Christine Bell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

 London, 1841

There I was, retired from time pirating, enjoying a full if somewhat conventional life as a wife and mother. Then a chance encounter with a stranger drew me back into a world I'd thought I'd left, quite literally, in the past. From his odd behavior and even odder answers to my questions, I knew Phineas Grubb was up to something. I should have trusted my instincts—before he pulled out a time-travel mechanism and dragged my brother, Bacon, back with him...

Salem, 1698

The infamous Witch Trials may have ended a few years earlier, but the people of Salem are still pretty touchy about outsiders that appear in town as if by magic. Thanks to Grubb, my brother's been accused of witchcraft and thrown in jail. Now it's up to me and my husband, Dev, to save Bacon's bacon before the hysteria starts up again, and the course of history is altered forever...

This novella is the sequel to The Twisted Tale of Stormy Gale which I also reviewed.

My Review:
Although you could probably read these out of order without getting too lost, I highly recommend you begin with the first. There, we meet all the major characters and we get to fall in love with Dev, who becomes Stormy's husband. The first story is definitely in my opinion a romance, the second I can't quite label as such. Dev and Stormy are already married with a precocious daughter in this book, but I was pleased to visit this world and these wonderful characters again.

Ms. Bell's writing style is riveting. From the very beginning, I'm pulled into Stormy's viewpoint where she takes me on an adventurous ride through time. With this journey she chases a suspicious time traveler back to Salem, Massachusetts, where the infamous witch trials are fresh in the memories of the residents. There she must save her brother who has been arrested as a witch, an event that threatens to ignite another mass hysteria of witch hunts. Stormy and Dev need to save Bacon and stop the rogue time traveler from messing up the events of history.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story just as much as the first. As of this moment, I don't see any more books published in this series, but I certainly hope that changes sometime in the future. I'd love to read more of Stormy's time-traveling adventures and snarky dialogue.

Book Review: Brook Street: Thief by Ava March #bookreview #Regency #mmromance

Thief by Ava March
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

London, 1822. It was only supposed to be one night. One night to determine once and for all if he truly preferred men. But the last thing Lord Benjamin Parker expected to find in a questionable gambling hall in Cheapside is a gorgeous young man who steals his heart.

It was only supposed to be a job. Cavin Fox has done it many times—select a prime mark, distract him with lust, and leave his pockets empty. Yet when Cavin slips away under the cover of darkness, the only part of Benjamin he leaves untouched is his pockets.

With a taste of his fantasies fulfilled, Benjamin wants more than one night with Cavin. But convincing the elusive young man to give them a chance proves difficult. Cavin lives with a band of thieves in the worst area of London, and he knows there's no place for him in a gentleman's life. Yet Benjamin isn't about to let Cavin—and love—continue to slip away from him.

My Review:
This book wouldn't let me go. I started reading it late one night. Just a few pages, I thought, until I fell asleep. Two hours later, at 2am I was still awake enjoying this captivating romantic read. I kept turning "just one more" page until I reached the end. I simply couldn't stop until Benjamin and Cavin found their happily-ever-after. And these two men definitely deserved it! After all that they'd been through, they deserved to find happiness in each other's arms.

This is an lovely erotic romance between two men during the Regency Era. One is discovering for the first time where his passions lie and another is finding true love for the very first time. Their encounter with each other changes both of them in different but significant ways. The rest of the story is about how they come to terms with those changes and what to do about it. I loved these characters! They were well-written and really drew me into the story.

I definitely enjoyed reading this book! This is the first book I've read by this author, but I'll be reading more from Ms. March if this is the beautiful, tear-jerking prose she is accustomed to writing. I've already added the rest of the Brook Street Trilogy to my TBR list. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a sweet, passionate, charming romantic tale.

Stranger at the Hell Gate by Ash Krafton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jagger Sintallon, a half-demon warrior, has dedicated his existence to fighting demons who enter the world through Hell gates. A loner of conflicting ideals, he offers shelter to a troubled woman but knows he is too rough, too dangerous, and too cocky for her delicate nature.

Dedicated to Divine Will, Sonya Camael, a Seraph, is determined to discover why she is drawn to Jagger's doorstep and the reason behind her mission. She needs the demon's help but fears he may get himself killed before she can figure it out and the world slips into Hell's dominion.

Sonya faces grave danger with evil stalking her every move, and Jagger shouldn't care but realizes he cares more than he'd likely admit. Sonya knows Jagger cannot win this war alone, but will her divine intervention mean his imminent end? Or will just the right combination of Heaven and Hell set the world right once again?

Kindle Edition, 72 pages

Published March 25th 2013 by The Wild Rose Press, Black Rose

My Review:
This was a short, sweet romance between two sensual supernatural creatures. I was swept into the world of humans, demons and angels right from the start. Sonya is a Seraph seeking help from half-demon Jagger. Their world is gritty, harsh and painful, but there is beauty and hope, too. Because this was a short story, I don't want to give too much away about the plot. The characters were believable and well-written. I liked how the chapters were brief and split between Angels and Demons. This made it easy for me to slip back into this world when I had to step away from the book for a quick moment (I have kids who demand this attention all of the time!). As with her other books, I enjoy reading this author's writing style. Ms. Krafton has a way with words that leaves this reader breathless. Elegant and poetic with gothic undertones. A quick, enjoyable read for someone wanting to dip their toes into an imaginative world.

My Review:

I've been writing for years and years, but I still enjoy reading the how-to books for writing. In this book, the author claims you can learn to write a novel in 3 days. I believe it. I wrote a novel in a week when I was 15, then again just last year. Three days would be quite a record, and I am definitely up for that challenge!

In this short book, you'll find a list of things you need to accomplish writing a novel in 3 days. The author includes her method as well as some tips and suggestions. For a new writer, this is a very informative book that will aid you in achieving your goal. The method she uses is an excellent way to get that first draft written quickly. I especially liked her ideas for outlining and the caretaker. For a more advanced writer, one who has studied the craft and read many books on the subject, there's really not anything new. However, I did enjoy reading it anyway. Ms. Roberts has an engaging voice and a clear sense of humor which made the book a quick and entertaining read.

My Review:

This is a WWII era romance, set in London during the Blitz of 1941. Molly is an Air Raid Precautions warden. Her job is to look out for enemy aircraft so she can alert the neighborhood of danger and help people find safety during air raids. During the night, London enforces blackouts to make it more difficult for enemy bombers to find their targets. Molly meets Guy, a visiting American, as he is lost among the darkened city streets and lights a match to see his way. Guy is intrigued by Molly and finds every excuse to spend more time with her, even accompanying her on her lookout for the night. During their night atop a roof they learn a lot about each other and by the next morning they promise to meet again in four days. Meanwhile, Guy heads to Leicester in search of his uncle, whom his mother wants to return with him to America. When Guy returns to London four days later, he finds…. Well, I won't tell you what he finds. I don't like spoilers!

What I can tell you is that this is a charming and sweet romance that I thoroughly enjoyed. This is a story about love at first sight. The characters were well-rounded and likeable. The dialogue between the couple was flirty, engaging and witty. There are historical details woven throughout giving the reader an interesting glimpse of life in London during the Blitz. Not2Nite was filled with a range of emotions that kept me turning the pages with eager anticipation of the happily-ever-after these two characters deserved. Also, I enjoyed reading about Molly's cousin. I loved her spunkiness. I'd like to see her in a story of her own one day.
